The jump scares work (jump scares almost always do; they're the easiest way to convince the audience that they've gotten their money's worth), but Malum is much more impressive when it turns its talented ensemble cast loose on material that was obviously a lot of fun to play with.

A lot of dreamlike logic floats through a freakish onslaught of dependably scary imagery strung together by what fits a moment versus the fluid nature of a more captivating survival scenario.

I loved the 2014 Last Shift and wrote about it. Although the new adaptation adds depth to the story, the unnecessaryness of such a remake, unfortunately, reduces the pleasure of watching a little bit.

It only gets really exciting in the last 20 minutes and that's not generally a good thing. Malum's resources are more than intriguing but its development is flawed. It's too much back and forth in the same place, searching for clues and answers in so many dark corridors that it never really explodes as it should. To make the atmosphere work and to make it believable you need more than a confused and terrified protagonist in her situation, you also need that same atmosphere to capture you as a viewer and as far as I'm concerned Malum doesn't do that.
I wanted answers yes, but whatever happened to the heroine stopped mattering to me halfway through the film. She's just the vehicle that will take you down the road of the rest of the story, but she's not a character you really care about, and her conclusion is the most telling proof of that. Everything was left halfway.

Malum has enough budget to be too glossy to be gutter fun, and adds little visually much beyond some very mediocre practical effects, often feeling that – yet again – its ambitions outstripped its grasp.

I actually really liked the original movie and when I saw the trailers for this one, I was really excited. This movie started off great! I was hooked at the beginning but midway it really does fall off the deep end. It is too heavy on the jumscares, some were awful and you can see coming from a mile away. There were a few moments that were unexpected and those were quite good. The movie also relied a ton on practical effects and give them an A for effort but a D for execution on them. They looked extremely fake at times and it's sad to see. Once the climax starts everything just goes all over the place, and it just ends in a terrible way. I do get that the first movie ended in a way not everyone would like but this one just made me wish I only watched the first half of the movie. So it gets a 5 from me. First half was good and the second half was borderline awful.
