Director Richard Eyre has struck gold. Twice. Dench and Winslet are a riveting matchup.
90
A saga of unbearable sadness and romantic beauty.
80
The film is not a biopic or a portrait of a famous marriage so much as it is an imaginative essay on what made a union between two radically different people work as well as it did.
75
A delicately upbeat, even humorous celebration of love and sacrifice.

Though Iris is extremely well-acted and beautifully photographed, some audience members may find themselves agreeing with Bayley's frustrated complaint: "I've never known who you are."
70
It's a great achievement, quiet enough to allow room for her excellent supporting cast -- but strong enough to be felt over James Horner's omnipresent, typically overbearing score.
50
A glacially-paced disease-of-the-week movie blown up to big screen size.

What a strangely pointless film !……so **** bored with its material and so boring to watch - a kind of Dutiful Exercise for everyone involved....Tiresome one-note performances wedded to tedious one-note direction. Rarely have I watched a film script and a ham-fisted directorial touch produce a work that so totally abandoned the characters ! They are depicted here with something like complete indifference. They bore us and ultimately seem almost ridiculous and pathetic..... The only thing this movie has going for it is snob **** that - sad to say- is almost always enough to "wow" the critics.
