The irrepressible tone of mordant giggliness this movie hits so often is entirely its own, keeping the movie buoyant throughout its over two-hour running time.

Ultimately, the film is successful in having its cake and eating it too. It is both a tense political thriller and a crackling satire of drunken power. The comedy of the first two-thirds becomes the horror in the last, as these people’s willful ignorance of danger becomes terrifying in its potential repercussions.

The director is so eager to make a spectacle out of this scenario that Good News begins to feel as self-insistent as its characters.

Well-made black comedy that turns a potentially serious true story into a humorous piece.
