Funny Boy is a luminous coming-of-age tale seen through the eyes of a relatable yet entirely unique experience.

The urge to find hope in tragedy is as inevitable as the one to recognize shapes in clouds. But Funny Boy leaves an unsettling chasm between this one slender story and the grim history it represents.

A disappointing film. Does not live up to the novel. The controversy around this movie shed light on some very important points that Deepa Mehta overlooked and that too involves matters that cannot be overlooked. Shameful attempt.

I tried to find something that I like in this movie but it was near impossible. The scenes are historically inaccurate and portray the conflict wrongly. Most of the actors have no idea what they’re doing but that of course could be because they are non Tamil and clearly have no clue about the language or culture. Deepa Mehta’s newest film is a complete let down. Read the book and call in a day, instead of wasting your time.

Director Deepa Mehta ambitiously juxtaposes a teenage love story with rising political tensions and ethnic violence in a film that is ultimately about thriving and sometimes just surviving as someone deemed “different.”

Funny Boy is valuable in letting us see this world and this history through different eyes.

There is so much going on in this film, much of it so rich in detail, that you wonder how better the original material might work as a television series.

Funny Boy falters when trying to link together the personal and political, making for a well-intentioned film that never delivers much depth.

Mehta’s elaborate long takes contribute to the general sense of tumult, but the film never fully shakes the sense of stating the obvious.

Does not represent the Tamil nor the **** community. This movie is trying to change the narrative of our Genocide by showing nothing really happened. Please don't support or watch this movie.

A story by and about a **** Tamil man and the anti-Tamil pogroms, without Tamils and instead the very oppressors.

A shameful attempt at making a movie that does justice to a beautiful Tamil story. I don’t even think basic understanding of the Tamil culture, language or history was done.

So disappointing that the director would take a a story that should celebrate the tamil culture, history and language and turned it into a disgraceful movie!!
