Appropriately for a movie with two uses of “super” in its title, everything in this DB film looks and feels supersized. It’s a ton of fun to watch on the big screen.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a must see for fans that salutes one of the series’ best relationships, but newcomers interested in more than the fun of an action-packed visual spectacle might want to check out some of the TV series first.

A great return to form for the Dragon Ball franchise, turning the focus mostly away from the flashy action setpieces and back onto the characters where it belongs. Those flashy elements remain present, as they are at this point a staple of the series’ identity, but they feel more like icing on the cake than the central focus. At its core, Super Hero is about exploring the fun dynamics between characters new and old. It shines a spotlight onto characters like Piccolo and Pan who have desperately needed that attention, and it is a must watch for any Dragon Ball fan.

The Dragon Ball franchise’s first 3D CG-animated feature film is a fun, low-stakes love letter to Gohan fans with exciting momentum as well as room for some moving sentimentality amidst earth-shattering fights.

While this new “Dragon Ball” spinoff may not be all things to all viewers, it’s also a thrilling showcase for Toriyama’s beloved characters.

Super Hero gamely tries to explain the backstory a bit at the beginning, but trying to keep up as we are plunged into a world of bad guys with outrageous quiffs, super-skilled preschoolers and green-skinned martial arts masters with droopy forehead antennae is quite futile. If, however, you can relax and just let it wash over you, Super Hero’s eye candy animation is mesmeric.

A serious upgrade in “Dragon Ball” franchise animation runs up against the same overdoses of exposition, endless back story and arcane plot contrivances designed to pit characters against each other in epic throwdowns in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” was a fun watch. Just to get one thing out of the way: The CG animation isn’t that bad. Quite the contrary, it made for a lot of cool shots and dynamic camera angles. One of the best things about this movie, is the fact that they focus on other characters besides the two main hitters. It’s so refreshing to NOT see Goku and Vegeta front and center for a change, and have the rest of the gang take care of business! All that said, one problem I had with the movie was that it didn’t do much to pump me up the way the other movies did. This is BY FAR the weakest movie in the “Dragon Ball Super” series, feeling like a silly filler arc most of the time with very weak steaks that don’t really sell you on it’s premise. Also, the "Big Bad" is a mere shell of one of the best villain's in the whole series. As a non-canon movie, this movie isn’t necessarily required viewing, but if you’re a big “Dragon Ball” fan, this is a solid matinee movie.
