Dior And I isn’t any kind of hard-hitting exposé. Tcheng — who previously co-directed another style doc, "Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel" — is seduced by this exclusive world, and he communicates that allure with undeniable flair.

The heart of Dior and I is with these seamstresses and cutters, artists in their own right.

For all its grand statements about artistry and identity, Dior And I is most effective as a study of the hard work, both physical and emotional, that goes into creating something new.

For people already interested in fashion, the film’s appeal will be obvious, but Dior and I deserves to go beyond a small target audience.

Bolstered by deft editing that keeps the proceedings moving at a light, graceful clip, this behind-the-runway look at one of fashion's legendary brands has a sleek, efficient stylishness in keeping with its subject.

More compelling when focusing on long-serving staff and their skills and opinions

It is clean, crisp and passionless. You almost wish for some Bravo sleaze to add a little edge to the proceedings.

Belgian designer Raf Simons was hired by the fashion house of Chirstian Dior to head its haute couture line. This film follows his efforts to create his first collection. Since his design style isn't as personality-driven as some more egocentric names, a lot of time is spent with the staff that actually creates the garments. If you're into the fashion world, this offers another behind-the-scenes peek, but it's not as fascinating or revealing as other docs on the subject. A lot of what ends up in the show (presented in an marvelous flower-covered mansion) is never shown in the process. There are also some slightly-arty flashbacks to the musings of the titular designer and his early influence. The only genuine insight into Simons was in the vulnerable moments before and during the show. (Criterion Cinema only)

Sometimes you are just in the mood for a light entertaining doc so my expectations were low for DIOR AND I. My expectations were met. Not very insightful or particularly new, DIOR AND I is a good time. Not much more. Raf Simons, the central figure in the doc, is not very interesting and there are far too many elements thrown in making the film feel totally unfocused. A good editor could have saved this one.
