You emerge from this experience rather like a returning U-boat crewman -- drained, blinking in the light, but oddly triumphant. [Director's cut]

At once a devastating condemnation of war and an exciting action film...The additional running time only adds to Petersen's masterfully bleak, claustrophobic atmosphere. Das Boot is by no means a pleasant experience, but it's an intelligent and emotionally gripping one that you won't forget. [Director's Cut]

One of all time greats, and old movie, but one you shouldn´t miss. Very suspenful, very entertaining, will keep you gripped to your seat.

The best german movie all time. The suspense is high during almost the whole movie and it is easy to understand what is happening. In the same time the movie gives a good view into the normal day on a uboat, because it is more realistic than sensational or put in some feelings or patriotism. The atmosphere is great and the play with the sound is amazing. Classic

Wolfgang Petersen's direction is an exercise in pure craftsmanship. [Director's Cut]

Sweaty and claustrophobic, exciting and horrifying at the same time, it never lets us forget we're riding aboard a giant, primitive tin can, a hunk of industrial machinery that mingles the illusion of omnipotence with the reality of a floating prison cell. [Director's Cut]

Racing through the sub, squeezing through tiny openings, director Wolfgang Petersen's camera brilliantly evokes the claustrophobia and clamor of undersea battle.

Unlike Hollywood's hygienic undersea dramas, Das Boot graphically depicts the nasty intimacy of a long mission.

The film has no qualities beyond its formal polish--and its careful avoidance (or rather, displacement) of the moral and political issues involved can seem too crafty, too convenient.

Review for the Director's Cut, in German.
Is Jaws my favourite movie? Is Shawshank? Is The Empire Strikes Back?
No, because Das Boot is.
The tension, the danger, this is a slow burn movie with a feeling that everything on-screen is authentic to the hellish experience of being stuck on a U Boat in WWII. That's why I prefer it in German with subtitles (although the original German cast did the English dub so its pretty good). Watching in German adds to the authenticity.

A true epic, what a masterpiece, one of the best and most intense war films I've ever seen.
Now I have to find the different cuts, let's see if it gets even better.

The English dubbing was awful so I switch to native German with subtitles. Film states 40,000 U-Boat crew went to sea and 10,000 came back, but I didn't care if only zero had came back. They killed my people, so... I was so detatched from watching this movie beyond the historical WW2 stuff.
