The movie's superhero-laden backbone is meant to support a deeper message. Adam Egypt Mortimer's Archenemy is a painful reminder of how society fails people, and bleeds colorful nuance and thematic messaging in every frame.

This movie is a new spin on the antihero. I really enjoyed it! The main characters are sympathetic and likable. There is so much more they can do if they franchise this!

What’s really great about Archenemy is that Mortimer never shies away from that darkness. By toeing the line of mental illness, he can expose the cost of comic book heroics and the evil being fought against.

Small, imperfectly formed but quite entertaining all the same.

What you’re left with is a mixed bag of colorful, bizarro superhero world-building and threadbare characters that leaves the viewer with little-to-no interest in what happens next.

A critique of post-millennial journalism is one of several ideas raised but mostly abandoned in this genre pastiche, which never really coalesces despite some promising elements.

Movie Nation
The dialogue has its moments, but the jokes are too sparse to buttress the arch, comic book camp tone Mr. Adam Egypt Mortimer was going for. And while the wigs are fabulous and the effects interesting, it’s all something of a hash. Coherent enough, sure, but making sense of it seems like a fool’s errand, start to finish.

This is one time that I definitely don’t agree with the critics’ s score for a movie. I can’t even begin to recommend this movie hard enough as I scramble to keep my excitement for it in clear and concise thoughts. Because of that I might go a little out of order for why I think it was so great. I’m hurriedly typing in my take on this movie after just finishing it. The first thing that stood out to me was how it is shot and edited better then most of the films I’ve seen this decade. I can’t get over just how good this movie looked. It’s on a level very close to some of the blockbuster films for how technically and artful it is produced and put together. The casting and acting is wonderful. The story might come off a bit crazy, but it keeps you entertained while guessing as to the true origins of the main character. Because of that I never lost my suspension of disbelief. While the pacing is a little off, it still builds and leaves room for suspense. The score isn’t quite memorable, but it does its job adequately. My one complaint is the animated sequences weren’t up to the rest of the films quality. The art for the animation was great, but the animation was just very janky. Not smooth. More akin to a motion comic. If that is what they were going for it unfortunately took me out of the movie every time it happens. If you’ve seen James Gunn’s “Super” and liked it I would be surprised if you saw this and didn’t love it. I’d say check this “super hero” film out.

It has some interesting ambitious elements, but ultimately it's a short-budget thriller that can't get past that barrier.

(Mauro Lanari) A single doubt: is worse the cartoony part or the directed and acted one?

This was a really ambitious movie that would have benefitted from toning it down rather than playing into the cheesiness of it all. The animated scenes scattered throughout really mess with the pacing and take away from developing other parts of the story. The action scenes are featured at a bare minimum (this is largely a drama) and are very simple and uninspired. Really, This just isn't a good movie. The script had potential but it wasn't as well thought out as it could have been. Having such a small budget didn't help things either.

Joe Manganiello must be desperate for own ****’t think any other reason he’d align himself with this disaster. He plays a homeless drunk who maintains that he’s actually from another planet in a parallel universe and has super powers. An eager young online journalist and his sister get involved with him after they anger the wrong people. Anyone hoping for a typical superhero movie will be gravely disappointed. This is a dark, gritty crime drama with lots of sci-fi physics jabberwocky. The action is minimal and when it does appear, it's not special. To make matters worse, what could have been cool otherworld excursions (and exposition) are presented in low-budget, unattractive animation. There is absolutely nothing to recommend this talky, cheap-looking, unfocused and uninteresting mess.
