With strong performances, the gorgeously overwhelming environment (the sounds of wind and flies are practically supporting characters), and at least one agonizingly long close-up, Age of Uprising unsettles as it raises troubling questions about the price, morality and flexibility of a "principled stand."

Greatly cognizant of the revenge genre's penchant for hypocritical demagoguery, director Arnaud des Pallières unsettles the audience's usual feelings of vicarious blood lust.

The feudal revenge drama sacrifices thrills in favor of moral reflection in the unspoiled French countryside, keeping most of its violence at arm's length.

Perhaps as a parable, simplicity is what is required, although sometimes the film does not rise to tragedy. Visually, Age of Uprising is classy and plausible, but delivers less than it promises.

It's a strong story of lonely, even futile righteousness, which makes the plodding execution by director Arnaud des Pallierès somewhat mystifying.

Kleist’s direct language and straightforward storytelling are nowhere in evidence in Pallieres’ narratively challenged adaptation, featuring a French-speaking Mads Mikkelsen in one of his least impressive characterizations.

Unfortunately, Arnaud de Pallieres’s film succeeds neither as a decent adaptation of the book nor as a rewarding movie in its own right.

This movie is a different narration from what we are used to in many other revenge stories. It takes us to a level of reality. It does not try to make us excited or to use our feeling to bring the story forward. Mads Mikkelsen does not manipulate the audience by a sudden turn of the character. He is a businessman, and the only reason for his actions is that he could not get justice through the legal procedures. He did not want to be a hero, but he could not stand injustice. The fight scenes are brutal and far away from the heroic fight scenes. Those that we see in action movies and feel energetic to watch. Even the dialogues are not trying to be extraordinary. They are simple conversations. A simple narration can affect the audience more than exaggerated scenes in an action movie.
