Although Pasikowski is heavy-handed in his filmmaking, sometimes in the extreme, Aftermath does show the danger inherent in this kind of groupthink.

What gives Aftermath its peculiar strain of portent is Pasikowski's consistent suggestion of the futility of bold, desperate attempts to undo a wrong.

An uneven but consistently compelling film that, with its roots in the horrors of World War II, generated no small amount of controversy in its native Poland when it was released there in 2012.

What keeps the film so fascinating is how even its protagonists are greatly flawed. While certainly upsetting, Aftermath takes a look at the dangers inherent in an abundance of truth.

The idea of framing Holocaust atrocities in contemporary genre terms, although intriguing, is not without its perils, and the secret, when revealed, looms too large to fit within the plot’s parameters, creating strange disconnects between form and content.

Pasikowski isn’t interested in actual characters or narrative nuance; rather, the prime concern here is censuring Polish anti-Semitism, which, no matter how righteous an aim, eventually comes at the expense of engaging storytelling.

According to the authors, this movie is for Poles and about Poles. Two brothers are in the center of this controversial move, the older one comes from America to visit his younger one after 20 years of living separately. They discovered that their village played a role quite different from the official version during years of Holocaust. They found out much more than they wanted to. The movie is made as a thriller which I personally do not like. But I understand the intention: the authors wanted a wide audience to see it and discuss it. And they hit the target. Many theaters in Poland banned the movie but it is sold in DVD format in large numbers. Both authors and actors keep receiving death threats for creating the movie. I applaud their bravery.

About as subtle as a sledgehammer, AFTERMATH has an important story to tell about the duplicity of Poland during the Holocaust and tells it like a horror tale from the depths of WWII.
