SummaryIt's New Year's Eve 1981, and a wild assortment of comic characters are looking for romance in NYC's rollicking East Village. Can a poser, a hunk, a teeny bopper, a gabby cabbie, a cute klutz, and a bevy of too-cool-to-cope artists find love before the stroke of midnight? [Paramount]

200 Cigarettes doesn't have a bad scene or a false note. The picture is a succession of pointed little moments, nicely written by Shana Larsen and acted with comic assurance and sensitivity.

Gathers a partyful of young players and barely gives them enough of a story line to puff on, but it gets by on personality anyhow.

Nothing much happens, and that's the point, but all this wheel spinning could have used more grease.

The plots vary widely in their watchability -- from mildly amusing to stupefyingly godawful.

This vapid '80 punk party reeks of 200 Cigarettes.

Dreadful...Maybe another 200 cigarettes would have helped; coughing would be better than some of this dialogue.

A twentysomething comedy with a brain-dead script, unflattering lighting and 16 performers in search of a scriptwriter...[It] feels like one-sixth of an idea stretched to the breaking point.

Certainly not for everyone, its humour is awkward and does not leave a lasting impression. Rudd, Love and Chapelle dominate the film's key moments, which are limited, and some quotes will come in use for the odd house party. An interesting twist to conclude, and 100 minutes of prolonged conversation, nicotine intake and lack of anything stable wraps up in something that's alright if you've got nothing else lying around.
