All in all, Wander Stars is a good time for RPG fans and anyone nostalgic for older battle anime. I had fun with it and you probably will, too.

Wander Stars proves to be a major delight, especially if you’re a fan of the classics that the developers obviously have a lot of love and respect for. Yet, being a phenomenal RPG with an innovative turn-based combat system and a found family of characters you can’t help but grow to love for their own merits makes it a worthwhile experience on its own. While I find the ending satisfactory, much like many classic anime season closings it honors, I wouldn’t mind seeing further adventures of Ringo and company either. The stars may be far apart, but given constellations and the like, they can always find each other again. The creative Wander Stars is one of the brightest video game stars I’ve played this year so far.

Wander Stars turns words into weapons, mixing flashy anime-inspired visuals with a combat system that rewards creativity and experimentation. While a bit of randomness can trip up the flow, the game’s humor and heart separate it from most shonen-style showdowns.

Has a unique style of gameplay. You accumulate words and then combine them to name your move (like anime fights). Each word adds an effect or damage point. Combined it could be like +5 damage (if strike is also used) + fire element 2 damage + some effect like 1.5x of total. You get the idea. Then you run around the map to collect some treasure coins or upgrade. All this is good so why 5 stars? Because the variety is quite less. Gets monotonous quickly. Map explore, click through dialog, fight repeat. It definitely needs a lot more variety. Also the story could be more engaging. Currently the main character is on her way to meet her mom (or grandmom?) aaaand that's it! Could have some more thrill element.

Es un juego con mecánicas divertidas e interesante, con una animación sobresaliente, me gustó bastante

A fun, lightweight Paper Mario style mini-RPG that stands out because of its excellent retro anime presentation. There's light strategy in the turn-based combat, and room for buildcrafting. The story is like an old cartoon. A comfort food game that feels like it's from simpler times.

Wanderstars makes using the word homage less scary because it knows what lessons to learn from the past. It recognizes what’s good about its inspirations and what to leave behind, while ensuring its unique personality shines throughout its entire runtime. At every step in the journey, I was excited to see what mess Ringo and Wolfe would find themselves in; I knew that, regardless of what was waiting for them, an adventure worthy of the works that inspired it was about to unfold.

Wander Stars is an incredibly cute love letter to the classic anime series. It takes the extreme style of Dragon Ball’s bombastic combat and playfully turns it into a turn-based RPG, fully embracing the camp hyper-stylised nature of its inspirations. It also tells an unexpectedly emotional tale with diversity in its cast of characters. A delightful treat for the Cheez TV kids (and the furries).

I wanted this game to be good. I waited till midnight. Couldn't wait to try it. It was really neat for 20-30 minutes. Then you realize each level is the same three enemies. The "map" is a Mario party boardgame style map. The battle system is made up of words you collect and string together like "fire" "super" and "punch", which would be cool if the word effects weren't all stats and had any of the exciting animations that the artstyle promises. A super extra fire kick looks exactly like a regular kick, just with a fire themed bonus damage number popping up on the enemy, again of which there are incredibly few. It's very phone-gamey, quality-wise. Very shallow. It's adorable, has a solid look that initially hooks you, but it's all flash and it is in no way worth more than about 5 bucks. It relies solely on the fact that you'll see its impressive-at-a-glance presentation and buy it. You shouldn't. Better games cost way less.
