Mildly intriguing, this action-adventure - based on the motion picture of the same name - offers thrills and chills in limited amounts. [Summer 2004, p.43]

Responsive play control and detailed graphics will make you want to venture deep into the story, but difficult battles against incidental enemies may keep you from your goal. [Aug 2004, p.123]

The game is a repetitive button masher that requires a shade more intelligence than a potted fern to operate, and players can expect to just keep going through the same thing over and over again screen after screen, level after level, with a few new weapon upgrades that really won’t add any excitement. The collision detection is horrible, and the game loses any fun value after about the first 15 minutes.

From the gameplay to the graphics, Van Helsing is one poorly developed game. I don't even care what the excuses are, this game should not have been released in the state that it's in.

Unfortunately, the graphics are simply horrible. The entire game lacks any real pizzazz, and the entire game feels lifeless.

An absolute crapfest of a portable experience.

If you're looking for a horrifically bad game that takes less than two hours to finish--but arguably does follow the plot of the film--then, by all means, give Van Helsing a shot. Just remember to hold onto the receipt.

Alas, there must exist crap amongst the cream of the crop. I really wanted to get behind Van Helsing -- really -- but cannot ignore the terribly sloppy interface that fails to entertain one in the slightest.
