Valkyria Chronicles shatters all strategy RPG conventions.

Playstation: The Official Magazine (US)
The story is a real hoot. [Dec 2008, p.78]
Make no mistake, Valkyria Chronicles is a really, really, really good tactical RPG, and fans of the genre should pick it up without delay, but beneath the inviting exterior and thoughtfully designed battle system lies a game with a few too many clunky inconsistencies which directly impact the strategic heart of the experience.

Amazing game that's unfortunately overlooked. The mix of third person shooting and JRPG elements in a strategic setting is refreshing. The story is great with some moments that really hit.

Cool art style and concept ruined by endless yammering and an uninteresting story. I shouldn't spend more time in stuck in menus and skipping cutscenes than actually playing the game.

For strategy RPG buffs, or fans of Xcom, Valkyria Chronicles is an amazing game to recommend. Great gameplay that's easy to learn, but satisfying to master (if not difficult at times). Visually stunning, because the artstyle helps it age very well. Each character has their own quirks that help them shine, or flounder, in certain circumstances, making team deployment even more crucial. Challenging, but fair gameplay. And an amazing story that makes it easy to recommend to fans of story driven games. It's a shame the two sequels were on PSP, and one not localized. If this would have sold better, it could have been a flagship title for Sega.

The game is a complete package of truly innovative and engaging gameplay, an extremely well-written and well-executed storyline, and a stunning presentation on every level.

If you're looking for an RPG that strays off the beaten path, go buy Valkyria Chronicles. From the gameplay to the visuals, it's one of a kind. It has appeal for both strategy heads and role-players who find high fantasy to be low on their interest scale.

Un action-RPG cómo ningún otro, la estética y visual le dan un aire diferente, el gameplay sólido. Una auténtica obra maestra.

The new perspective works well, injecting some much-needed action into the genre without sacrificing tactical choice. In fact, the switch actually creates more choices if anything. [Dec 2008, p.102]

Visually and aurally it's a real tour de force, the plot pretty much stays the right side of the crazy line and on the whole combat feels fresh and well designed. There are a few hiccups and they do take the gloss off things more than the rest of the game deserves, but they shouldn't be enough to put you off.

With its beautiful visual style, interesting characters and compelling story, Valkyria Chronicles tries to go beyond the usual Japanese SRPG mechanics, embracing a new system that combines direct and turn based action to great effect. The result is a game with true tactical sense, where different tactics can be succesfully used according your play style.

Simple and elegant, it takes influences such as Konami’s Ring Of Red and even Pandemic’s Full Spectrum Warrior and elaborates on them to create something unique and interesting. [Christmas 2008, p.100]

This is one of the best RPG games I ever played for 30 years: it is one of the best tactics games I ever played in 30 years. Perhaps it is the best combination of both I ever played for 30 years (did I mention that before?) The story is great, the characters will be forever in your memory. The game play is awesome and original. Learning curve is just right. Difficulty is perfect at any level. Game engine is flawless. Options are relevant and interesting. This is an amazing and truly gem ****. And you will play it again. A jaw dropping Sega classic.

I don't understand why this game is so hyped up, or even why it was remade on PS4. Things that piss me off: 1) At any given time, if any enemy has a shot on the back of your tank, or can position themselves to be so, YOU IMMEDIATELY LOSE, this is extremely frustrating, especially when you have to play a 2 hour long mission. 2) Movement is absolute **** having to move your characters around the levels is a pain in the ASS. You never know if they're going to make it to where you need them, you can't do it over, and if you happen to be in range of an enemy, they will simply shoot you for free until you are dead or end the turn action, which you have to learn to do QUICKLY. 3) The map, who the **** made this map, you absolutely cannot tell where ANY OBSTACLES ARE, the minimap and regular maps are absolute **** for as much as you can get out of looking at them, but the camera does this really nice pan shot through the map as it becomes the real terrain so can see how good of a job they've done of NOT REPRESENTING THE ACTUAL TERRAIN. This all being said, it is a very unique game and i would like to have seen this concept done.... you know... better.... with every single thing in the game being better explained and less counter intuitive and more forgiving.

The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires.
