An update of the much loved Atari game 'Tempest', TxK adds a few additional elements to proceedings but I can't say I ever found the game all that engaging. The gameplay, that was revolutionary back in the early 80's, doesn't really hold up to more modern entries in the genre and I got bored pretty quickly to be honest.

Apparently chaotic and impossible to control, TxK is in fact a perfectly designed game, immersed in a psychedelic tempest. A great old school shooter, with tight controls and superb level design.

Twitch shooting at its very best by one of the acknowledged masters of the genre. Wonderfully balanced gameplay. Beautiful vector style graphics which make the OLED screen sing. Perfect retro sound effects. Excellent ravey soundtrack. I bought a Vita for this game and I have not been disappointed. The Vita finally has its first essential game. Feed your head to the web indeed!

The definitive version of Tempest and as such one of the best arcade games ever made, even if it’s only a minor improvement on previous versions.

One of the most polished experiences of the great trajectory of Jeff Minter, a new high for the Tempest-like games that it´s enjoyable for veterans and new players.

Despite the occasional frustration of visual pollution, all the aspects of TxK come together to make it a wonderful merger of what made an arcade classic fun and what makes modern twitch-based games enthralling.

I found this to be a visually interesting, dynamic game, but not an especially engaging one.

Poetry in video game form. Great visuals, great sound track, sublime game play. Minter at his best. This does not disappoint. And the price is amazing making it fantastic value.

If you like old-school, arcadey shooters then you might like this, but apart from the impressive visuals and above-average soundtrack, I feel there's something missing that I can't put my finger on. It might be too complex for its own good. There's the fact that the laser swaps "feet" depending on which direction you're heading, an obtuse leaning mechanism, jumping, and the fact that spray-and-pray more rewarded over accuracy. The designs of the enemies are so simple due to their vector nature that they don't seem to have any real character or menace. An 11x8 pixel space invader sprite is infinitely more threatening than a vector bow-tie. This isn't a bad game. At all. It's a solid, well crafted shooter. But it's missing something, and whatever it is, I just don't get that "just one more go" feeling that I do with other games of this ilk.

It's certainly an accessible arcade style shmup, but I personally found it to be a bit lacking. I rather enjoyed the trippy, psychedelic visuals. I would have enjoyed the techno soundtrack more had it have been a lot less repetitive. There's quite a bit of content here to keep gamers coming back. There are a large selections of levels and three different game modes. The problem I had is that I didn't really want to keep coming back. It provided some fun in short bursts, but it wasn't long until I wanted to put it down and play something else. Also I found that the game doesn't ask much of you as far as precision goes. Mindlessly spamming the X button works fine. Which is great considering how touchy the controls can be. However the real key to victory in this game is to get the "AI Droid" power up. Once you do you're set. Those who enjoy arcade tunnel shooters are likely to find a lot to love here. There's enough content to keep them busy for quite a while and it does provide some decent arcady fun. Certain deficiencies however will mean that it's not a game for everyone.

Since I got it for free I can't complain but this game isn't very impressive or fun. For those who don't know this is an updated version of Tempest but honestly the game's menu is horrible and doesn't even make sense along with there being little to no instructions on what to do it just makes the game boring and not fun.

SummaryGlowing vectors, explosive particle effects and a pulse-pounding soundtrack are core elements of many modern arcade shooters - a style that Llamasoft defined with its seminal 90s tube shooter. TxK is the spiritual successor to that genre-defining work and brings you 100 levels of score-chasing gameplay married to an outstanding soundtrac... Read More
