SUMMERHOUSE
SUMMERHOUSE is not for everyone. It was for me.
Be warned: There isn’t any sort of ”game” to the Summerhouse experience. This is a simple, doodling-sandbox meant to allow users to craft serene landscapes without needing any drawing skills. It does exactly what it sets out to do but could easily be SO much more.
SUMMERHOUSE is a small building game that isn’t interested in scores, sprawling cities, or complex zoning. It just gives players the tools to create homes using a relatively varied array of parts, with some unlocks. It’s a relaxed approach that makes it equally fun to create weird buildings that cannot exist in the real world or to try and replicate memories of places one really visited during the summer. The lack of structure will be immersive for many gamers, but others might have problems staying engaged. The city-building genre offers a ton of options for anyone who wants deep systems and complexity. SUMMERHOUSE, a title created by a solo developer, is for anyone who just wants to put pieces together and build something in serene landscapes.

The perfect definition of Simple & Efficient. The chill atmosphere lends perfectly to a Sunday afternoon under the plaid, with a nice mug of hot chocolate. The possibilities for building and assembling are endless. Even though the number of blocks is limited, the assemblies are numerous and varied. The only limit is your imagination. You can place the blocks wherever you like, even on top of other blocks of the same type to create new things. You can also "flip" them horizontally using the "F" key to choose the direction. The weather can be selected using the small icons on the right to create the perfect atmosphere! Sun, rain or night will accompany you with their distinct sounds and music. My preference is for the Night mode, which lets you enjoy incredible peace and quiet, with the sound of birds, wind, waves... Pure relaxation. At the start, you'll have only " basic " blocks to work with. If you make the right associations, surprises will appear and your world will come to life. You'll unlock new blocks with little characters, animals and other companions... I loved finding all those special blocks so that I could place them in my sets later and create little stories! This game is certainly not for everyone, but for me it's a big yes!

For its low asking price, I have no complaints with Summerhouse, barring a minor controller-related issue I ran into on Steam Deck. Barring that, it plays great on the system, and looks gorgeous on the Steam Deck OLED. I hope it does come to iPad in the future as well as this is something I’d love installed on every device I own. If you’ve wanted to build your own nostalgic dream house or just play around with a creative interactive toy, Summerhouse is for you.

If you fancy a sandbox where you can design exteriors of homes, cafés, hotels – whatever you want, really – SUMMERHOUSE is a seriously cool one. It’s as basic as they come, but there’s charm in its simplicity. Nothing to bog it down: just you, some design tools, and whatever you want to create.

SUMMERHOUSE puts you in a meditative state through simple and intuitive gameplay in conjunction with pixelated graphics. The game was made by a single person, which explains its small scale.

SUMMERHOUSE by Friedemann is a visually striking game that offers a serene building experience, perfect for players seeking a creative outlet without stringent gameplay mechanics. While it shines in its ambiance and artistic design, the game could benefit from more refined controls, clearer objectives and enhanced accessibility features. It's a game that won't necessarily consume hours of your time in one sitting, but will be a delightful escape for those who appreciate its laid-back, creative charm.
