Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero delivers solid tactical RPG gameplay, but suffers from excessive tutorials, awkward camera angles, and slow-paced dialogue. Still, if you enjoy long battles and dungeon crawling, it's a rewarding experience.

Marona's, Ash's and Apricot's adventure is yet another worthy entry in Nippon Ichi Software's catalogue and a memorable experience for fans of the company or those who like a borderline experimental touch to the tactical RPG genre.

After years of mere cameos and remasters, Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero finally gives the series the attention it deserves: a true sequel that expands on its mechanics. It takes the series into new waters with a brighter tone and streamlined storytelling, but in doing so, it drifts away from the emotional depth that made its predecessor so resonant. Yet, the very fact that this sequel exists signals something greater for the series—if this is just the beginning, then the future of Phantom Brave is brighter than ever.

The sequel to Phantom Brave Hermuda Triangle was long overdue, the story does not dissapoint it's everything you'd want in a good PG heartwarming anime story packed into a tactics RPG. It is not without it's flaws though , the new dungeon system that uses treasure maps seems like a good idea but becomes a bit of a hassle to come across items/weapons desired and the levels vary drastically.
The menu when in battle seems not to reset to the top of the choices so accidentally ending a turn early or making an incorrect action happens often. The juice bar is a fun way to distribute EXP and upgrading ships was a blast, i just wish there were more to it. All in all it doesn't quite stack up to it's predecessor but it is a fun nippon ichi game overall.

Most recent update causes game to crash on launch 100%. While uninstalling and re-installing game I can play before crashing for about an hour losing my save data. Then it crashes and installs the update repeating the process. I could force offline, but I haven't had another game crash this much before ever.

If you like Disgaea series, this is a nice option to play, it has the same spirit but with a refreshing gameplay.

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is a surprising sequel that does a good job of living up to its predecessor, but it doesn't exactly tread new ground for the franchise. A cute but forgettable plot, solid gameplay, and a near-infinite amount of grinding potential give the game a solid amount of value. The only thing holding it back are the unimpressive visuals and poor performance. If you're a fan of the Nippon Ichi games or the original Phantom Brave, there's a lot of fun to be had in this sequel.

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero offers a refreshing take on the SRPG genre with its unique gridless combat and deep customization. While the slow pacing and complex systems may deter newcomers, fans of tactical games will revel in its rewarding gameplay and intricate strategies.

Some parts of the game are undeniably charming, such as the story, the character art and the bright colours. However, reusing a dated system really shows a lot of its age. Along with design choices that are simply confusing, it drags down the experience along with the 3D models. While there is certainly a level of 'too much' going on, this also applies to battles in a good way if a player is ready for it. The craziness is part of the charm and many of the battles are surprisingly hard, short of power leveling.

Phantom Brave is sure to be a fun, but possibly underwhelming, return to the franchise for fans of the original title, as well as of other NIS titles like the Disgaea series. For newcomers, however, the game has failed most of its attempts to make gameplay accessible to even well-versed veterans of the turn-based strategy genre. The end result is a niche-interest title that will likely be hit-or-miss with hardcore fans, due to the rough and messy assembly of its multitude of interesting parts.
