It is not a bad idea. It is just unfinished in spirit, like a proof of concept that made it out the door too early. With more time and clearer direction, this could have landed. As it stands, it just doesn’t.

Monsters are Coming! Rock and Road is your next new Survivors obsession, with a clever tower defence twist and that “just one more run" hook.

Monsters Are Coming! Rock and Road is a fun riff on various run-based subgenres, building itself upon the foundations of roguelite, bullet heaven and tower defence, slapping some wheels on the corners and seeing how far it can go.

Monsters are coming! Rock & Road is a fast-paced roguelike with unique and highly addictive gameplay. The visuals and character animations are a show of their own, making every run even more engaging. The price is worth every penny, and I hope more content continues to be added to the game

There is nothing about this game that I do not like. Monsters are Coming! Rock and Road is a fairly straightforward roguelite which plays like an arcade title. Your mission is to escort your mobile town to the finish line. Along the way you will fight hordes of monsters which try to attack the hero or the town, gather resources to repair and upgrade defenses, trigger some side mechanics, and choose locations of individual towers to maximize synergies. Each playthrough takes about 25-35 minutes, and consists of four segments which are interspersed by a shop and a survival minigame where your hero is pitted against hordes of monsters without the aid of the towers. Combat is very arcadey and mostly just consists of whittling away enemy HP, although some monsters have fun mechanics like explosions which kill other monsters or invincibility fields that require some targeted attacks by the hero. There are around 10 weapons to unlock throughout the game, and you get an extra weapon at each shop location, for a total of 4 before the final segment. For the final segment you face off against a powerful boss with a variety of mechanics to keep things interesting. The gameplay is quite straightforward, yet quite hectic and very satisfying. The town keeps moving, the monsters keep coming, and you must continuously balance the amount of time spent gathering resources and defending the town, and there is never a dull moment. The four environments are quite unique and feel distinct. The number of towers is very high, and I think I have tried maybe 10% of possible builds with 15 hours in the game. In addition to the large assortment of towers, there are 10 different towns that have different abilities, keeping things fresh and entertaining. The arcadey feel and satisfying progression system make it very enjoyable, even if you only have 30 minutes. However, the variety and RNG mean you can also play much longer. I have nothing bad to say about this game, it is very well polished. Perhaps the basic auto attack could be spiced up a bit, and also I have not found it worth upgrading towers until you run out of room, which is basically never. However, I have only started exploring the builds, so I may come back to edit my review ;) anyhow, back to it!

My only complaint about Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road is that there isn’t more of it, and for under $10, they have already provided dozens of hours of content. Addictive and replayable, with a killer soundtrack to go with it.

Sprinkling tower defence strategising on top of an addicting roguelike bullet-hell proves a stroke of genius for Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road. Fantastic persistent and in-game upgrades that keep the gameplay fresh, a vibrant and playful art style and excellent bullet hell mechanics make this an absolute blast, especially on Steam Deck. While it does struggle with some repetition in environments and a grinding bottleneck, it'll be hard not to spot this entertaining monster coming over the hill.

Monsters Are Coming! Rock and Road is a solid addition to the never-ending bullet-heaven/rogue-lite/survivors-like (yeesh) genre. It looks nice, plays well, and has at least one bopping track to help carry it through a series of runs that are only let down by some punitive progression requirements.

Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road is an easy recommendation for gamers seeking a light, quirky experience built for short play sessions. It’s cheap, runs well across platforms, and offers solid, simple gameplay—though its repetition, awkward meta-progression, and lack of standout strengths keep it from knighting itself as the castle’s noble defender. Still, it’s fort-tastic fun if you jump in with the right mindset and a bit of time management.
