This game is exactly what it has set out to be, a romping shooter with a few laughs, a lot of fun, multiple deaths you'll want to start over from, and lots of guns, bullets, and craziness. For a little over $2 it's a great experience, a very good mobile game with a great soundtrack (serious, it's like Hotline Miami good, which makes sense, same porter to Vita) No regrets buying this.
Retro styled graphics, solid chiptune soundtrack, quick playability, and an attractive price point might convince you (as it did me) this is worth picking up. Unfortunately, you're likely to bump your head when you dive into this very shallow pool. What starts off as a fun run-and-gun roguelike quickly devolves into a repetitive bullet hell slog as you hold down the directional button to run (and shoot) right. It's as straight forward as you can get as you move from level to level completing the same objectives with nothing more than a slight change in background color and an occasional new enemy. Enemies constantly spawn from both directions and fill the screen with unavoidable damage and projectiles which keeps you running from health kit to health kit instead of trying to skillfully accumulate a high score. Run, shoot, run, shoot, jump, shoot, die, repeat. Games that are known for their difficulty (like Spelunky and Dark/Demon Souls) offer rich and deep game systems that take time to learn, but once learned, become master-able and elevate the experience. A game that kills you by spawning 3 land-floating mine combos in a row isn't "difficult" it's just cheap. And that's a hard example; it seemed like the majority of deaths came from situations that were completely out of my control or from sloppy mechanics. Considering the structure of the game changes very little from start to finish (and tends to drag), dying for seemingly no reason makes re-starting less and less appealing each time. There are some roguelike styled rooms that are placed in missions but after a short while you'll see the majority of what the game has to offer and see the same "random" events with enough consistency you'll know what to expect. There are also a good deal of mission "objectives" which adds some incentive to keep playing but they are most often too simple or out of reach for far too long. Overall, a very mediocre experience that manages to be too frustrating to be bland. It's extremely low price-point won't hang over your head for too long, but when compared to say, Super Crate Box (a game that does everything Gunslugs does better and only $1.50 more), it's hard to recommend.
Gunslugs is an action-packed mix of Metal Slug and Spelunky, seeing the player fight through randomly generated stages with only one life to live. Although simplistic, this old school throwback has a lot of charm and enough hooks to keep you coming back long after you've mastered the few stages and earned a high score.
Gunslugs is a great tribute to the old school, while still maintaining a fresh outlook on the genre. While its random level generation isn't perfect, the control and chaos at play here is a fun distraction for an afternoon. You'll shoot a lot, you'll die a lot, and you'll always be moving right, but you'll always be having fun too.
Gunslugs is very good. Controls are excellent, graphics are cute, and the action is fun. Beating a hard level feels rewarding. Levels are randomly generated and tend to have decent design, but sometimes an awkward set-up ruins the flow and forces a restart.
note that this game is for the hardcore gamers (unlike me). i completed the first level. it doesn't reward me with anything but with more missions. i cannot complete the next missions which were really hard and annoying. its a retro type game and it has a price tag of 4$ but it is not worth your money. trust me. at all costs avoid this game. it doesn't deserve a score at all.
SummaryGunslugs is the most chaotic, fun, arcade action game you'll find on any platform! Non-stop action from the guys behind Meganoid, Meganoid 2 and Stardash !- We grabbed a bunch of expendable action hero's from the 80s and we made them team up as the Gunslugs to fight the war against the always evil Black Duck Army. Can you save the plan...
