Drop Duchy contains many more complexities in its later levels, including factions, variable terrain and bonuses such as “faith”. Unfortunately, bar a simple opening tutorial, Sleep Mill offers little explanation of rules, perks and units. You’re left to your own devices and rather too much trial-and-error experimentation to find the hidden potency of the best tactics. Still, this Complete Edition – released for consoles one year on from the game’s PC debut and including a bunch of DLC – has much to recommend it to tactical fans. You juggle blocks and armies at an unhurried pace via an attractive interface but you’ll wish your Napoleon had a few advisers willing to offer battlefield insight more often.

An intriguing blend of Tetris and Carcassonne. Several factions, numerous challenges, and a vast progression tree will keep you entertained for a long time. You'll constantly be making decisions and focusing on your deck's synergy, but RNG can still bite you in the face.

For once the smoke has cleared and the blocks have fallen into place, Drop Duchy offers a charming adventure where cute graphics blend with interesting and engaging gameplay. It may not be a ground-breaking take on the puzzle genre as a whole, but it is nonetheless an exciting concept with a great many clever touches. If you enjoy tactical thinking and relaxing puzzle-solving, this is an obvious purchase, and if you're willing to get to grips with all the complex choices on offer, you'll also find a game that you can spend countless hours playing over the coming summer months.

419 In this way, you soon find yourself trapped in a loop of contemplating how to forge increasingly complex synergies—weighing whether it is worth specializing in plains or forests, whether to upgrade a specific tile, or whether to hire mercenaries to patch up your faltering strategies. And in the event of failure, you start over with the bonuses unlocked thus far, hoping to stumble upon just the right boss or Tetrominoes. And so it goes.

Drop Duchy isn’t a flashy game, but it’s devilishly clever. It’s a title built on a strong concept, executed to perfection, that manages to captivate players with its rich systems, all while drawing on classic mechanics—some of which even trace their roots back to the very history of video games. Addictive without being flashy, challenging without being frustrating, it stands out as an excellent surprise for puzzle and strategy enthusiasts—now available to everyone.
