Colt Canyon is an excellent roguelike with razor-sharp gameplay that’s incredibly addictive. The rhythmic action is comparable to titles like Hotline Miami, and there’s a constant temptation to have ‘just one more go’. Some may not be too keen on the heavily-pixelated graphics, but it’s the gameplay that truly shines through here, and once you’ve conquered the steep difficulty curve you’ll find this to be a fine addition to the Switch’s growing selection of roguelikes.

Casting cinematic realism aside, this pixellated 2D non-stop shooting fest is not for those who can't take on a challenge but players who like to be pushed to the edge will be duly rewarded by its fast-paced, exhilarating gameplay. Colt Canyon would be even more rewarding and enjoyable if its experience lasted longer but even if it's rather short, there's enough here to satisfy some wild west-themed appetite, whether solo or co-op.

Colt Canyon is a fine half-twin-stick shooter/half-rogue-lite experience, varied enough to make us constantly switch between characters, weapons and approaches, trying to rescue a kidnapped partner in a pixel-based West Coast. While being quite short and sometimes more difficult to read, it still will please fans of both genres.

Colt Canyon offers an interesting take on the western genre which works extremely well as a roguelike adventure. Pixel art, twin-stick shooting, and a well-crafted soundtrack combine effortlessly, it’s just a shame that it is as challenging as it is.
