An awesome spiritual successor to old Castlevanias. The story is the weakest point, true, but everything else is splendid, especially the level design and the sheer amount of creative ideas. If you want a great action RPG platformer, you’ve got one right here.

Bloodstained has a lot going for it. Satisfying gameplay, many secrets to find, and a huge castle to explore. There is a lot to discover in how you play, especially as you find more secrets and items. The shard system is an interesting way to customize your gameplay style. It is very much more of what you love from Symphony of the Night and other Castlevania games of that era. But Bloodstained doesn’t do anything new with the genre. It borrows many concepts to create a game with more of what people loved about the other games. In short, if you’re a fan then give this one a go. Minus a few iffy aspects, Bloodstained is fun experience. Whether it falls into the realm of one of the greats is unlikely but I enjoyed my time anyway.

The king of Metroidvanias is finally here with a new title. A few bugs and weird animations will not prevent it from sitting on the throne.

What if a retro revival like Mighty No. 9 went right? Well you get Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Koji Igarashi's triumphant return to making Castlevania, but now with a new set of faces. Seriously, as much as I love the Netflix animes, Konami has got to make some more games in the IP. I like the remastered collections, but y'all left us on a couple of cliffhangers! Ritual of the Night seems to be most closely related to the DS Castlevania games in a lot of aspects. The Shard system mirrors Aria/Dawn of Sorrow's Soul system (unfortunately with all of its RNG-based pitfalls), Meriam could be Shanoa's twin from Order of Ecclesia and the Villager Questlines being such a major part of Bloodstained was a treat to see come back from Order of Ecclesia as well. The one area in which the game loses me a little is the story, since it seems like Iga wanted to evoke Castlevania without using any of the IP, (which includes public domain figures like Dracula confusingly enough). Not to mention, the setting and enemy design feel less cohesive, and it doesn't help that the dialogue in the game is extremely tedious, more often than not serving as an obstacle to the next bit of gameplay. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I believe that the game's biggest flaw is trying to cram as many Castlevania-isms in this game without all the space in the game to do so. It delievered on its Kickstarter promises, but honestly, it overstays its welcome just a little bit sometimes. Its lack of creativity sometimes disappointed me. Meriam's dynamic with Gebel is literally Shanoa and Albus. The execution of "final boss" fakeouts felt exactly like they did in Symphony of the Night or Aria of Sorrow. I don't really expect anything drastically different, but they were a little too similar for my personal liking. On another note, I never fully got used to this style in 3D models. I think I still do prefer the sprites since the visuals get a bit busy at times, but the cinematography during the cutscenes are great, the new boss and levels designed around 3D environments added a much needed spin on things, and seeing Meriam wearing some of the outfits and hairstyles you choose for her is fun as well. The extra modes are a nice addition as well, and the fact that they have an official randomizer mode is amazing as well; I will have to get around to that sometime. The playable side character modes are also here as well, although I haven't had a chance to fully explore those modes either. Despite a lot of the game suffering from what I believe to be a lack of focus on this project, we are still so back, and with no news from Konami about any interest in new Castlevania and new entries in the Bloodstained series being announced, this is something worth getting excited over! Also, this game is a Jojo's reference

Amazing Metroidvania and spiritual successor to Castlevania. This game is special.

Bloodstained is absolutely, unapologetically a game made for Symphony of the Night's many fans, and it lives up to that legacy better than I ever could have hoped for.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night carries on the tradition of classic Igavania games in a masterful way. As a long-time fan of the genre, I personally can't wait for additional DLC as well as the inevitable sequel.

Spiritual successors are commonplace with the growth of indie games. Typically, even the better ones miss on some level, missing some aspect of game feel or otherwise being "off." This game does not. Perfectly capturing the slight campiness (albeit exaggerating at times) of Castlevania games, with impeccable art direction and near-flawless gameplay, I cannot overstate how impressed this game left me. A genuine must-play for any Metroidvania fan, this was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I have had in years. Cannot recommend highly enough.

The wait was worth it. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a whole new castle to crash full of unexpected monsters and mysteries in the vein of classic Castlevania.

It’s more than obvious that Bloodstained could be very well named “Castlevania” and nobody would mistake it as a true sequel to Symphony of the Night. Igarashi managed to completely capture and expand one of the more influential metroidvania titles no matter if sometimes it may look a tad familiar.

Although certainly rough around the edges, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a solid adventure that will please Castlevania fans who have been longing for a new game to sink their teeth into.

Bloodstained is occasionally frustrating, refreshingly open, and as promised, wholly Castlevania.

While it's crammed full of fan-service alongside good core combat and exploration, Ritual of the Night's technical instability and some discomforting design decisions keep it from rivaling its influences. It was clearly made for the fans, so those without an already-established fondness may find it hard to enjoy.

One of my favorite games ever. The best thing in this game for me was vast amount of abilities that can be used for different situations in a creative way

This game is a 7-8. I feel like docking it even more because of the sudden paid DLC 5 years after release with a trophy list.

It's like sotn and Aria of sorrow without the charm:
• the 3d really feels bad and poorly done, not to mention the animations, • the room layout design is more crash bandicoot with hidden walls than Castlevania • the story is atrocious (to be fair the story to pretty much all of these games are bad, but it doesn't feel on purpose) • the music is like a great value brand version of the prior igavanias I'll likely finish it because there just aren't enough good Metroid Vania games so we kinda have to deal so I think a 4 is fair, worse than average, but not atrocious Get it if you, like me, are obsessed with these kinds of Metroid Vania games because it will definitely scratch the itch, but if you're not a fan of them in general I'd definitely recommend like, hollow Knight over this
