I am age 42 & played a lot of Diablo 2 when it came out. I am also a professional video game programmer. Pros: => Great for game preservation. I really hope this is successful so more games can be preserved like this. => Console controls when moving and attacking are really amazing. IMO, this is the number 1 reason to go back and play this game if you are an old gamer ... to play from your sofa on a console. Given this is a "remaster" of PC, not a full "remake", it really has been done amazingly. Compare this to other games (like Titan Quest) who tried to do the same thing with an older game, the combat controls are amazing! => I love the skill system and classes in this game. Diablo 3 was weird with skills. IE: You have a bow equipped, but can use a fist skill. You have a bow equipped .... NEVER shoot arrows unless you have the crappy "normal attack" assigned, which is buried, nobody uses and just gimps your character. D3 skills and animations are just WEIRD. Diablo 2 just makes sense. You actually use your weapon you have equipped. You have a normal attack and then skills that consume mana. My brain just comprehends and accepts this easily. => I care about LOOT in this game. I never really did in Diablo 3. I just looked at up or down arrows, and didn't read stats all too much. IMO D3 gives you way too much magic loot. It gives you so much loot that its all meaningless & its so good on the drops, very early on, that the merchants are meaningless. In Diablo 2 however, I truly read what each piece of loot does. I actually wear non-magic loot sometimes. I also save up to buy things from the merchants. I also like how the stats don't change much over time. How constant the normal weapons are is similar to Dungeons & Dragons or Elder Scrolls, and I dig that. IE: A basic dagger will do the same damage for every plain dagger you find. Somehow this makes me care more about each piece of loot I get. It also end up learning their stats when they drop so the earlier stuff you don't even have to read the description for non-magical items. Neutral: => Updated graphics are great for the most of the game view. BUT ... USER INTERFACE still has rough edges for Blizzard standards. Like the XP bar just moves up statically with no animation and is a yellow square. There's a lot of rough UI elements like that. I get they just wanted to "remaster", but it just looks weird to see things that rough for a $40 Blizzard game by todays standards. Cons: => The Inventory, Skill & Store interfaces really aren't that amazing. It's a hybrid of console controls and virtual mouse with console stick. A virtual mouse is notoriously the worst way to port a PC user interface, but I understand how they wanted to preserve making shapes in your inventory. => Inventory space is so small, potions don't stack. I know they wanted to preserve the original. But you have to go to town SOOO often. lol. I'm sure game design-wise this serves a purpose to force you to manage your loot and think about your inventory more. But if not having stackable potions or expanded inventory was ONLY decided as a safeguard to not offend the whiny purists. Then I wouldn't agree with it. Me? I wouldn't complain if we had stackable potions... I think thats some of my life I cold get back. Take away: Overall. I am having lots of fun playing this game! I'm not mentioning the server problems at launch, because we all know Blizzard will fix them and always has.
Stay away. I don't even know where to start about all the issues this game has. I actually wrote the devs about how much this game let me down. But it is legitimately too big to fit in 5000 characters here. I truly wanted this game to be only slightly-decent. But it has so many design problems that are already solved by the genre. This game is literally the most frustrating multiplayer experience I have ever had. Its not even bugs, it is just awful design decisions. Which i state again...THESE ISSUES ARE ALREADY SOLVED 15 YEARS AGO. Good luck trying to quest with your friends, especially if they have jobs and you can't all be the same level at the same time on the EXACT same quest, otherwise you will waste VAST amounts of time. I hope the game gets better over time. I truly do.
Relaxing way to pass time and rewards thoughtful strategy. I find myself playing this game more than AAA titles. It has a good deal of randomness and unlockables to keep things interesting.
I have ~30 hours playtime and it’s still fun. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this game!
I was concerned the controls might be awful but I actually like them better than on the computer. I find it very enjoyable to play this game on my TV more than I did when it was released originally. There’s a lot of parts of this game that are very experimental by today’s standards, and I love it for that reason. It makes things not so cookie cutter. For instance, Wilds Mages have uncontrollable effects. There’s some real love by Beamdog here. I’m impressed with how they’ve mapped the controls for a console because it could’ve been a nightmare
Possibly the best voice acting in any video game. This is what its like when source material is respected and a game's story is done right. If you love the original Ghostbusters this is the best time to play this game if you haven't before. The script for this game is from the original writers and with the original cast. I always wanted a third movie and this is as close as we will ever get. The quality of the actors, writing and art-content is amazing. Its so much more enjoyable on modern hardware than when it was released (especially the Wii version, which had awful controls). Its so cool to immerse yourself in the world of Ghostbusters. Its fun just walking around and looking at the art. I personally put the game on casual because I just want to experience the story. The pacing of searching with PKE and then the action scenes is fun. My only gripe with this is that some of the story is almost sexually predatory, which feels weird by todays standards. But its a little dated. I get it. Also multi-player is removed. But seems like thats planned to be released later. Also, no customization of the main character is kind of a let-down, but I'm guessing it has to do with customizing pre-rendered scenes. I feel he doesn't really stand out in any way in character design and I often get him confused with Peter or Ray, which shows he's just poorly designed. The Nintendo Switch version is great on a big TV and in hand-held mode. In an age with crap re-makes and lack of creativity or respect to source materials, this is the opposite. I highly suggest buying this to cast a vote for games like this. Also Harold Ramis, rest in peace. He's great in this game!
This game is original, fun to play and totally worth $20. I have over 25 hours of gameplay in this game so far. Its been an addiction and I can't stop playing. This is the game I want to play all the time on my Switch. I was hesitant to get this because of the negative review, but I am SO HAPPY i disregarded them. The artwork is great, the strategy is solid. It takes all my brain power to actually play this game, which is very welcoming for an experienced gamer like me. The controls still aren't 100% 2nd nature yet, but I have no real alternatives for suggestions, so I'm fine with it. Not sure how else you are going to control 3 lanes other than mapping them to 3 buttons. So the rest of this review is defensive. But it has to be given the lower score. It makes me sad because these low reviews are THE REASON games don't experiment too much these days and typically play things safe. For the sake of the industry I'm going to defend this game. I am floored at how many reviews I've read where they haven't even beat the game and criticize it. Learn how to play a game before you review it, seriously (yes, even IGN)! I think game review sites are starting to have more and more newbies writing reviews, or they are just getting too corporate and want to get the reviews out the door. ITS TRAGIC because this game is really great. I think there are a lot of people writing reviews on this that don't even like the genre or didn't actually take the time to fully learn the mechanics and strategy. For instance, I read one review, and they guy said you couldn't see the information on stuff before you picked it up, but could on the PC. NOT TRUE! You can't see info on items you get for the FIRST TIME because you don't know what it is, which is kind of cool. Then, FOREVER. You can see the info before you pick it up. GUYS, come on! Learn games before you review them. Maybe I just grew up in a time when games had no real tutorials, but I'm fine with this game not teaching me and letting me slowly figure things out. Its fun. This game is fun and its great quality. I think maybe its too smart for most people, or people are just impatient and have too many games to play now a days to relax and learn? People say this is a "Plants vs Zombies" clone. Give me a break! Its not even the same thing by FAR. PVZ is tower defense. This is NOT tower defense. Where are my towers? I have CHARACTERS that move back and forth. Do they think its like PVZ because it has lanes? So do many other games (with that definition, is this a Subway Surfers clone too?). Is this like PVZ because it has undead? So do many other games. Maybe Has Been Heroes has some influence from PVZ on their art? Who knows, but I'm fine with that. I love PVZ art, its great and fun just like this game. Seriously, most of these reviewers are immature and too quick to judge. This game really isn't like PVZ at all and I can't believe how many times I've read that. People get upset that they die? Boohoo. You unlock stuff when you die and start over. Its all on your head, dummies. You aren't really dead, you keep the same characters and go on another adventure with new stuff. Its fun! And each time you beat the game you unlock more heroes! I'm sorry you can't get over your ego enough to think you should be alive at all times in all games, or somehow its not fun for you because you don't win 100% of the time. Buy this game if you like a strategic challenge, fantasy setting and are mature enough **** that many games now a days feel too easy. This game is really rewarding if you take the time to learn it. Its not impossibly hard, you just have to think. Every time I lose, I get what I could have done better (though occasionally I get a really really bad role, but thats interesting too) . This game is polished, original, done really well and totally worth $20. I mostly love it because its not like anything i've played and thats the reason we play games, is for new experiences.
This is the polar opposite of shallow gameplay, this may be the deepest 3DS game you will ever play. There are hundreds of hours of game play to be enjoyed here. This game is very well executed and such a treat for anyone willing to put the time into truly learning the fundamentals of the game. It could be a gripe that some systems are overly complex as they keep adding layers over the years and there are almost too many ways to access the same functionality. But lets be realistic, no game is ever perfect for everyone. I personally find the complexity fun and rewarding to explore. You can play this game in so many ways. If you are relaxed you can just collect items and learn new weapons. If you want to be alone you can play solo. If you want to play multiplayer and go all out and fight the biggest monster, have at it. This game should also be noticed for its amazing AI and monster behavior. This version of Monster Hunter also takes creative risks, which is rare these days. The addition of playing as a cat is amazingly ridiculous, but awesomely fun. If I had to be critical, the only negative things I have to say about this game is that it is mostly devoid of story relative to other Monster Hunter games and some of the levels from other Monster Hunters were better in the other games. I guess I also don't understand what going to other towns really gets you in this game, it could be just one and would be the same. But its classic Monster Hunter awesomeness and as always very rewarding to play with your friends over and over.
