The Unholy War

I do not know if The Unholy War holds up, and honestly, I am a little afraid to find out. Some games are not hidden gems because they are secretly perfect. Some are hidden gems because they found you at the exact right **** me, The Unholy War was one of those games. I grew up in a trailer park, where everybody’s house was close enough that multiplayer was not an online feature; it was somebody yelling across the lot. We played this game constantly. I remember the strange fighters, the weird powers, the feeling that every character had some ridiculous trick you had to figure out or get wrecked by. It may have been my first real arena battler, and this is probably a hot take, but my memories of it are warmer than my memories of Power Stone. That does not mean it was better. It probably was not. But The Unholy War had a strange identity that made it stick. It was part arena fighter, part tactics game, part creature-feature nonsense, and entirely the kind of oddball PlayStation experiment that could only exist in that era. It was rough, weird, uneven, and memorable.I doubt I would recommend it today as some lost masterpiece. But as a childhood multiplayer game? It mattered. It was one of those games that became great because of where I played it, who I played it with, and how much fun we had tearing into each other with bizarre monsters before we even had the vocabulary to explain why it worked.

I played this game with an open mind, but by trying to make this game inclusive, it has segregated probably the most popular player base, which are heterosexual males. I am all for inclusivity, but not belonging to a different group, the dialogue was terrible and many times made me feel uncomfortable. There was no ability to just play the game and get past the constant "inclusiveness" being shoved down your throat that may actually isolate the player. The gameplay itself is very basic roguelite gameplay that brings nothing new or exciting to the table. At this time I can I wouldn't recommend this game. There are much better out there for the same price. I gave it a 3 because its not worth playing, but it's also not glitchy or a cash grab or anything that makes it unplayable.

Do not let the lack of polish ruin the game for you. This is a worthy successor to the original Mass Effect trilogy and does a great job at introducing the new setting and problems that will be faced throughout the Andromeda games. There are a few things that are different from the original trilogy that some players may like or dislike. First is the absence of the paragon system, which I found liberating. The choices I made actually felt like I made them. I did what I thought was best for my team without the guidance of trying to stay into preset parameters of good and evil. The second is the ability to change classes on the fly. No longer are you required to pick a class and stick with it throughout the whole game. I believe the way they implemented this in the game, and made it part of the lore, was really well done. Third is that you can no longer can really command your companions, you have no choice over their equipment, you can tell them to attack and that's really about it. Now that some of the bigger changes are out of the way, I will just hit on what I liked and disliked about the game. The game play is the best in the series. I mean the running, jumping, shooting all feels very satisfying. It plays like a full blown cover shooter now, and less like a KOTOR game. It works very well and everything fills natural, but if you were into more of the RPG element of the game, then that's all just about gone. Combat is fast and fluid with abilities having to be mapped to active buttons, there's no pausing and wheeling a specific ability or weapon, it's all done in real time. The game is VERY open. You have main story missions but the game spends no time opening up the galaxy and saying go explore, create your own path. Unfortunately, I believe this hinders one of Mass Effects previous best points - the story telling. If you choose to just follow the main story, which is possible, you miss a lot. I mean a lot. Andromeda's best missions, and most fleshed out story telling, are side quests (particularly the crew relationship quest lines) and it's a shame that in Biowares haste to make an open world game, they allow the user to bypass the best parts of the game. Now for the facial animations. The facial animations aren't bad, especially if you are playing the male Ryder, but they aren't great either. I do think Andromeda's lack of polish is what holds it back from being the GREAT game it could have been, but the animation is average. It's somehow worse than Dragon Age Inquisition which is three years older and much worse than the great animation of Witcher 3, but it's not so bad that it's distracting (or at least you shouldn't be distracted by it). In conclusion Andromeda is a solid game, that misses being great because of a lack of polish. It's still fun, and should make you excited for the next game, if you truly like the franchise. It's worth playing. gameplay stats: Game beat with an 88% completion in 55 hours on standard difficulty.

Very good but not great. There are some annoyances for me keep me from believing this is a great game, and it's definitely not a great Zelda game. Stamina is frustrating, what's the point of it when you can just craft a potion to restore it? If it's to make you waste a lot of time foraging, then well done. In the beginning there is a lot of stuff that can one shot you. I am never a fan of exploration based games that kill you instantly. Why have stuff in the starter area that can insta kill you? The shrines/dungeons are so short and not intuitive. I have only completed 8 so far, but there is nothing special about them. The first 4 introduced new mechanics, while the latter 4 did not even use the mechanics and werent challenging at all. The game is fun, it looks good, and it sounds like Zelda. It doesnt play like a Zelda game,

Beautifully done game. The story is deep, but not forced on you. You will have to take time to stop and read the trinkets to benefit from the whole story. The controls are tight, you won't die because of the controls ever. It's a puzzle platformer that doesn't overwhelm you. It was a good game, but a great experience.

The multiplayer is terrible. So I didn't base any of my review on it, my review is just on the single player game. This is the first Dead Rising game that I have been able to complete - while enjoying every minute of it. Finally, no time constraints, just explore, craft, and kill zombies to your hearts content. Dead Rising has always felt like an arcade experience, and now it plays like one, albeit without the difficulty to force all of your quarters into it. The game is easy. It plays a lot like the Saint's Row games, and that isn't a bad thing. I really enjoyed the humor in the game, there were a couple of parts were it really had me laughing. Frank West is a funny guy, and he just wants a fist bump. The series has always been about creating crazy contraptions and killing as many zombies as possible with them. If you liked the past games, you will probably be better of skipping this one. If you want a game that never takes itself seriously, and a ton of dumb fun, then give this one a shot.

Technomancer, you were almost great! Man, what could have been. Technomancer does a lot of things right, and a lot of things very close to great, but falls short almost every time. The game reminds me of an early Bioshock game, very early. You have choices, but you never feel like your choices have meaning. What really drags the game down is the difficulty. The game is frustratingly difficult on normal, and manageable on easy. I don't mind difficult games, as long as they are fair. There is nothing fair about giving enemies assault rifles that can kill you before you can get to them, while the only gun you have fires three shots before overheating. I played this game much later than it released, so I am not sure how release copies were, but I didn't see any frame drops during play. I also thought the graphics were great. While character graphics and animations were average, the environments were massive and well designed. Many times I would catch myself looking at the sky just to take in all the level of detail the developers put into the game. Characters have a lot of personality, that develops over the course of the story. The game has no fast travel and instead makes you walk back and fourth between the same locations, over and over again. The biggest problems with Technomancer, in my opinion, is the unfair difficulty, the forced back tracking, and the short length (for the triple A price, it was perfect for the $15 I spent)

Final Fantasy XV

Dec 7, 2016
Much like the Star Wars reboot, Final Fantasy XV is more for people new to the franchise then it is for loyalists, and that's not a bad thing. Final Fantasy gets a lot of things right. The combat, although repetitive, requires more interaction than it did in previous games. Which makes even little battles feel more involved. A lot of people are complaining about "holding the B/O button", but let's get serious, in previous entries you were just mashing A/X to confirm an attack during most battles. The boss fights are big and memorable - without feeling tedious. Combat is fun, it's repetitive, but fun. The main characters are life like, and you get a good feeling for their personality, unfortunately side characters are an afterthought. There is a lot of missed potential regarding the side character. The characters hint at their backstory, but never divulge it, and there are no side quests for more information. The world is open, but lacks personality. Only two towns are visit-able in the game, and one only for a short time. You never really feel immersed, or like you have the freedom to make your own choices. Instead the story is linear, but still very good - until the end. The ending feels like the developers somehow ran out of time. You'll see a part that makes very little sense towards the end, and it's never explained. There is a lot missing from this game, or is just an after thought, that fans have come to expect from Final Fantasy. Skill development is non essential, the skill board (ascension) does not develop the characters in any meaningful way. Summons are random, and magic is an afterthought. If you enjoy a good story, but with glaring holes, and want a linear experience, then this game is for you. And, it's good at what it is. If you are expecting a return to old, and comparing it to previous entries, then you will most likely be disappointed. Some technical specs. 35 hours to beat the game 50 hours to 100% the game. No guides involved.
