Skyfall9
Nov 12, 2012
Sam Mendez's Bond is a reinvention of an old dog. Just when the series was getting tired he makes it something new and more daring; similar to What Christopher Nolan did to Batman. The film is nostalgic, funny, exciting and dramatic what more could I have asked for then a fun time at the movies.

Flight8
Nov 12, 2012
Perhaps Flight is a little too long and may have one too many layers, but this does not stop it from being a very enjoyable experience. The film commences with the best crash sequence that I have seen and ends with one of the best performances of the year with Denzel Washington acting up a storm.

Safety Not Guaranteed7
Nov 1, 2012
Safety Not Guaranted is not overly dramatic or funny, but the light tone and depth of the story make it an enjoyable 80 minutes. The two leads are very likeable and the film is also about something, which is rare in our times.

Cloud Atlas10
Oct 27, 2012
What an amazing experience watching Cloud Atlas was. The film on a visual level is astounding on so many levels. And what levels this film had. Too many critics have been saying how this film is about how we are all connected but they are mistaken. On a dramatic level I was thrilled and on a intelectual level I was engaged for three hours. When I guaranteed the Dark Knight Rises would be the best film of the year I did not know there would be as great as a film as Cloud Atlas.
Oct 22, 2012
October Baby5
Oct 22, 2012
The message and social issue are relevant, but most of October Baby comes across as heavy handed and poorly written melodrama. A few scenes that touch on the issue and are very powerful but most scenes are heavy handed and poorly written. Too bad a much better film on the issue would have been great for a time like today.
Oct 20, 2012
American History X8
Oct 20, 2012
I had very high expectations going into American History X, but I found the whole to be less then the sum of it's parts. The film is full of situations but it never turns into a whole. This is not to say that it's parts are not extremely well made and powerful.
Oct 20, 2012
Martha Marcy May Marlene10
Oct 20, 2012
Martha Marcy May Marlene is one of the best films of 2011. The film has great performances powerful imagery and an outstanding ending. Many have called it ambiguous, but I believe further examination shows otherwise.
Oct 20, 2012
War Horse7
Oct 20, 2012
War horse is an over long flawed premise with a very powerful climax. At two and a half hours running time the beginning sequences can become too long and repetitive. The flawed premise is that millions of people died in world war 1 and yet the film is preoccupied with the life of a horse. However by the end of the film this could be forgiven.

Brick9
Oct 20, 2012
It's a very fun unique film. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Rian Johnson's screenplay carry this film the distance. The dialogue is so well written and so emblematic of 40's crime novels and films it can but only put a smile on your face. And the actors are true to the premise from beginning to end. Not once winking at the audience.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead9
Oct 20, 2012
The film's opening scene is so well made it quite possibly will never leave my mind. This scene sets the tone for the entire film. Great performances, Great screenplay, but the style may be a bit distracting in places. At a time when thrillers are more about action before the devil knows you're dead comes across as freshly old school.
Oct 13, 2012
Argo6
Oct 13, 2012
I cannot believe how overrated this film is. Sure it create's the world and clausterphobia the hostages are living in . Another quality of the film is in the riot sequences it takes the camera and puts you in the middle of the madness for this reason it is entirely indicative of it's time and place. Is this enough? Sure some of the humour is funny but it is not enough to carry the film. The story is so bland and never embellished except at the end when it finally gains momentum and starts to thrill. I know it's a true story and it wanted to stay true, but they needed to tell it in a more interesting way. If you had seen the trailer you basically knew everything about the movie. No twists or turns here most of Argo's runtime is just boring.

The Master10
Oct 5, 2012
It's not a perfect film but the effect it had on me warrants a perfect score. It has the best performances of the year with Joaquin Phoenix playing Freddy Quiad and Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Lancaster Dodd. It may be to long and some scenes may not work as well as they should but the overall effect of the film is undeniably powerful. At the end of the film a failed to get out of my seat it was that thought provoking and powerful.

Batman Begins10
Oct 5, 2012
Nolan made another great film in Batman Begins and it completely changed the super hero genre and it also began the best trilogy of all time. So much to analyse so much to entertain and so many performances to savour.

Kill List9
Sep 30, 2012
A gruesomely entertaining scary flick. It demands to be talked about seen again and again. It's hard to say anything about the plot but there are so many intricate themes and interpretive parts of the plot that will leave you thinking about it long after you've seen it . A mesmerising picture.

Underworld6
Sep 29, 2012
For me I found the film somewhat dull however it delivered great visuals and the odd scene that captured my attention. Also very good voice over narration from the protagonist. It must be set clear that this is not the type of film that really appeals to me.
Sep 29, 2012
Dredd8
Sep 29, 2012
It is an outstanding visual experience it relies not on character plot but the "fetishising" of it's violence. Some will be turned off by it I was thrilled by it. Although the film does not come to an epic climax that is set by the rest of the film, it's previous scenes were so gut wrenchingly violently beautiful you couldn't look away. The thing I was most impressed with was the 3D. It is the best 3D I have ever seen in any motion picture because it evokes a feeling, it transports you into the feeling of the person taking the drug.
Sep 29, 2012
Looper9
Sep 29, 2012
Looper is an exciting and intriguing science fiction film; even if some of it's shots are cliche and there may be a few plot holes. It is a film that had me from it's opening shots and pulled me through different tones and pacing but I say this in a good way. The first act set up the themes, world and complexeties of the story even if it's not directly related to the rest. It is not a film that solely relies on it's concept; above all Looper is about characters and the moral decisions they have to make.
Sep 22, 2012
J. Edgar6
Sep 22, 2012
What starts off as an engrossing subtle objective take on Hoover's life by the end turns into a film with a certain agenda. I did not feel for Hoover as much as I found him an interesting man which is why I found the beginning to be great. However the last 45 minutes fail to move the story but instead the agenda of the screenwriter. Dicaprio delivers an outstanding performance in one of the best looking films of the year. It had great potential too bad both of Eastwood's recent directorial outings have started off great but slowly fall apart.

An American Werewolf in Paris2
Sep 22, 2012
While I did not enjoy the first film an american werewolf in Paris is dreadful in almost every category. The acting is horrible including Julie Delpy who was so good in before sunrise and sunset. The film is not scary or funny it trades stupid humor over campyness and horrible CG instead of dark make-up werewolves. I hated all the characters and the relationship between the two leads.
Sep 21, 2012
An American Werewolf in London4
Sep 21, 2012
It is an old school film that was unsure of it`s self. The horror was not scary although there is artistry present during the transformation scene and many of the scenes where you see Jack back from the dead. I found the odd moment funny but much of the over the top humor did not work for me. don`t even get me started about the ending.
Sep 21, 2012
Punch-Drunk Love10
Sep 21, 2012
Another masterpiece from PTA makes Punch-Drunk Love one of the best romance movies ever made. Sandler is flawless as a lonely man struggling with anger and the pressure put on him by his sisters. This film is heartbreaking and often funny surprisingly sometimes at the same time. Paul Thomas Anderson and Christopher Nolan are the film artists of the 21`st century both uncompromising their visions to make only masterpieces.
Sep 19, 2012
Magnolia10
Sep 19, 2012
What a raw and powerful film that succeeds in every category possible. Writing, directing, acting, editing, camera work are all fantastic in another PT Anderson masterpiece. All the more great because it is a film that denies hollywood convention and instead creates something more bizarre and memorable and a work of art that demands to be seen and talked about.

The Avengers7
Sep 1, 2012
Joss Whedon creates a fun blockbuster with a huge ensemble cast that most directors would screw up. Not a great film but it sure is fun for it's 2 and a half hour running time.
Aug 31, 2012
The Dictator4
Aug 31, 2012
I thoroughly enjoyed Borat but this film is simply not funny. It's repeated unfunny jokes become annoying and the plot is predictable and annoying. I understand the film is supposed to have a thin plot but in this film it felt like it was getting in the way. Baren Cohen's humour may start to be wearing off after Borat.
Aug 31, 2012
Children of Men9
Aug 31, 2012
The film succeeds because of it's dramatic power. this is a result of the great camera work and great acting. However I found the films themes to be a bit week but this is a really weak criticism.
Aug 24, 2012
Me and Orson Welles9
Aug 24, 2012
Once again Linklater proves that he can direct anything. This film is charming and entertaining. It works as a period piece, a biopic of orson welles and a coming of age story as well as a drama. Every aspect and genre in the film works extremely well. This film is made with so much skill it is astounding. Christian Mckay blew me away with his subtle nuances as Orson Welles. The only time the film kind of faltered for me was it's climax which is the play itself.
Aug 24, 2012
The Grey9
Aug 24, 2012
The grey is a powerful, gut wrenching examination of existence. If the images weren't so tantalising the themes wouldn't be so affecting. The film constantly thrills drawing you away from certain of it's flaws.
Aug 23, 2012
The Expendables 23
Aug 23, 2012
Although this film should be considered to be one of the worst movies of the year for it's horrible acting pointless dialogue and possibly the dumbest and most cliche story ever, it should be noted that some of it's self aware humor does land. For example Chuck Norris telling a joke about himself. I couldnt stop laughing.
Aug 15, 2012
Bernie9
Aug 15, 2012
It is a film that works so well in so many areas it is outstanding. It works as a documentry, comedy, drama and comment of life in texas. Jack Black delivers a subtle funny and dramatic performance. It is a stunning achievement
Aug 14, 2012
Monsieur Lazhar7
Aug 14, 2012
Not enough of a comment on loss or anything else but the film is touching and the end wraps everything nice and tight. The film just doesn''t compare to great teacher dramas like to sir with love.
Aug 14, 2012
The Campaign6
Aug 14, 2012
Not all the jokes succeed and the end tries to make itself to important, but the rest of this film is good funny satire with plenty of references to past campaigns. It makes for an all right time at the movies.
Aug 14, 2012
Goon8
Aug 14, 2012
The films success comes from the attachment and likeability of Doug Glatt. Those going into the film expecting a couple of cheap laughs may be surprised. Although the film has it's share of slapstick humour it also delivers well written dialogue and even a little suspense. Doug Glatt may not have to much of a brain but this film sure does. I haven't had this much fun in this type of movie since kick ass.
Aug 13, 2012
Apocalypto9
Aug 13, 2012
The film builds it's characters themes and setting until it finally breaks out into a gut wrenching thrill ride. Although many are saying this is just an action film and has nothing to say there is a surprising amount of depth in the themes.
Aug 10, 2012
Kill Bill: Vol. 23
Aug 10, 2012
I feel as though Tarrantino's wasted his own and the actors talents. Unlike most of his movies the films talky scenes are boring and stupid. I loved the rest of his movies but Kill Bill vol 2 just ****.
Aug 10, 2012
Bronson4
Aug 10, 2012
If valhalla rising was a weak version of agguire the wrath of god then this is a weak version of A clockwork orange. The film's dark comedy falls flat and many scenes that are supposed to be horrific don't really draw the viewer in. Granted there were times where I felt bad for Charley Bronson but this is all because of Tom hardy's very good performance.
Aug 9, 2012
There Will Be Blood10
Aug 9, 2012
One of the best films ever made. The intrigue of the characters; the rich themes and the great acting add up to an experience that has only been matched by few films. Sight and sound pisses me off because it seems as though they ignore all the great newer films to make themselves feel sophisticated. Mulholland drive was the only movie in the top 50 from the 2000s. What a crock!
Aug 9, 2012
The Usual Suspects6
Aug 9, 2012
Great acting from spacey but rough plotting and a mystery that is not very well presented or interesting cannot even be saved by the films twist. Not a very memorable film.
Aug 9, 2012
The Descent6
Aug 9, 2012
The films technical qualities were unbelievable but seeing this film on dvd the technical qualities of the film did not add to any suspense. this may because i did not experience this film in theatres or there is no suspense present.
Aug 9, 2012
Before Sunrise7
Aug 9, 2012
A thoughtful film carried by it's natural dialogue before sunrise feels like an experiment that worked for most of it's running time. In parts my mind started to dwindle but my attention was eventually regained. The great part about the film is that it uses it's dialogue to make us feel for the characters instead of over dramatic contrived situations. The last few shots of the film have no dialogue but they are more touching then any other part of the film

The Dark Knight Rises10
Jul 20, 2012
There is no other super hero film quite like it! Not only is it realistic but it becomes something more art. Under analysis this film does extremely well with allusions to the french revolution among other things. Nolan creates a mood of over arching dread and depression in a way I feel like I've never seen before. As pure entertainment it thrills. As a piece of art it engages with it's numerous techniques that create a feeling of dread as well as being much deeper than that. Nolan may have made the best trilogy of all time. Recently I was extremely big on the amazing spider man but this film does everything it did and so much more. You will not see a better film this year! I guarantee it.
Jul 16, 2012
2001: A Space Odyssey10
Jul 16, 2012
The film works as a transcendent of genre. It is a true art film! Space Odyssey attempts to give us a sense of awe through it's great audio visual experience. To quote Ebert loosely it works in a similar way as music!
Jul 16, 2012
Inception10
Jul 16, 2012
What an astonishing movie! It is my personal favourite film of all time and it can also make a case to be the best film of all time alongside Citizen Kane. However Inception will not have the same impact Kane did so it's hard to judge.
Jul 5, 2012
The Turin Horse3
Jul 5, 2012
His use of mise en scene and film noir are great however technique on it's own does not add up to anything. I can appreciate art house films however this is simply bad art. It did not entertain my intellect by exploring themes nor did it entertain me on a manipulative level. This is where I differ with the critics they believe the film gave you a sense of awe, I believe the film gave me a sense of boredom. I have also seen the man from London which was also garbage. I'm going to give Tarr one more chance with Werkmeister Harmonies.

(500) Days of Summer9
Jul 5, 2012
One of those films where you genuinely care about the characters. In a day when most rom-coms are cheap and manipulative 500 days of summer deals with big themes and executes it perfectly with it's flawless ending.
Jul 3, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man10
Jul 3, 2012
It is a great film filled with human emotion and multiple conflicts. Webb makes a film more worried about characters then action. This is not to say that the action scenes are not masterfully crafted and beautiful looking. These characters are dear to us similarly to the ones of 500 days of summer. The only other super hero movies to have the same effect is Nolan's Batman series. You know that when you can compare a film to Nolan's Batman series it is a great film and this one is the best of the year so far.
Jun 28, 2012
Ratatouille10
Jun 28, 2012
It is a great film full of human emotion with an extremely well told story which is always pixar's strongest point. We deeply care for these characters which is what interests the viewer and makes the film truly memorable. The ending is nothing short of greatness. It brings all the themes and together with parallel scenes and humour.
Jun 28, 2012
Monsters, Inc.8
Jun 28, 2012
A wildly imaginative story and film that is executed close to perfection. Like other pixar films Monsters inc will not just entertain the kids, but also their parents. Not pixar's best because of it's lack of pathos for it's characters, but still a very good and imaginative film.
Jun 27, 2012
Brave7
Jun 27, 2012
Brave is a good film that is a blast while your watching it but after you feel as though all will soon be forgotten. This is a result of characters that are not memorable and a message that is cliches and that you've seen in plenty of Disney movies. Because of pixar's masterpieces I feel as though this film should have been better, but it is still good none the less.
Jun 22, 2012
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World6
Jun 22, 2012
Although the film engages it's viewers by the second half with a drama that surprisingly tug's on the heart, the first half is unfunny and unengaging. Nothing can be worst then continuous gags that completely fall flat. The film is probably a 5, but I gave it a bonus mark for having the audacity to deliver the ending that it did.
Jun 15, 2012
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives7
Jun 15, 2012
A hypnotic beautiful film that is very simple. In a film like this however I believe simplicity is not what is should be shooting for. Worth the time invested in it though.
