As a former carer to a quadriplegic worst off than Philippe physically, I can identify with this movie...these situations do occur and ultimately 2 people from different worlds can and do come together like this and often form a bond that can last forever, so I don't really see it as being far fetched at all. As for the way the movie communicated the story, I think it does a great job, sure it may gloss over the realities of such a relationship but I don't see how else this story could have been told...both became better men, and when that happens, the world becomes a better place...
