The Walking Dead: Episode 5 - No Time Left9
Nov 21, 2012
Wheezy247 9 I am going to be honest. Until the Walking Dead game series that Telltale has brilliant crafted, I cannot remember the last time I played a point and click adventure game, but I sure am glad I tried it again. Throughout the entire series, I saw my choices have an influence on what happened later in the episode or in later episodes, but never as much as that that is seen in the final episode "No Time Left." Telltale has successfully created a game that blends a unique art style, wonderful voice acting and a story that is probably the best story you'll play this entire year to create a series that, I believe, will have an impact on the future story development of video games. After playing through all of the episodes, I can definitely say that this was the most enjoyable episode, previously episode 2. It is such a delight to see how Telltale managed to bring the entire story together. The emotion that is brought out by the story and voice acting is so powerful, I almost cried at certain parts. I don't want to spoil the ending, but let's just say I can't wait for Telltale's newly announced Season 2. If you haven't played this game yet, you owe it to yourself to play all of the episodes. Telltale's series is not perfect, but the way they brought it all together at the end makes you understand why this game should be considered for game of the year. I would give it a 9.5/10.

Journey10
Nov 15, 2012
This is probably the first downloadable game that I'd ever consider winning game of the year. First let's get this out of the way, the game is only 2 to 3 hours long, but I can guarantee you that those few hours will be an experience like none other. The gameplay is simplistic, only being able to sing and jump and float around. It is fairly linear, but the setting felt vast at moments. The game is a work of art. Period. The emotion and story that is conveyed is powerful, despite there being no dialog. The painting like art style and gorgeous environments really **** you into the game. I actually sat my controller down at moments just to look at what was on my screen, it was that **** music is also beautiful and truly fits the feel of the game. Prior to playing this game, I decided to beat this game in one sitting. I have played it multiple times and I highly recommend playing it this way, because the impact of the game is all the more powerful that way. Also, despite this game being playable offline, you will want to play it online. The emotional connection that you create with a person that you never talk to once is so mind boggling strong that I literally cried a bit when I had to depart from my newly made comrade. If you have $15, just waiting to be spent, look no further than Journey to fill any gaming desire you have. Thatgamecompany should be applauded for adding something new and beautiful to our gaming lives. Despite it's shortness, I fail to find any other flaws in the game, and the all around experience is something every gamer should try. Journey gets a 10/10.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask9
Nov 11, 2012
I was a bit worried when Level-5 said they were bringing the Professor Layton series to the 3DS, because I wasn't sure how well the 3D would be utilized for a typically beautiful 2D game. Well despite my worries, Level-5 manages to create an experience that wouldn't be the same on the standard Nintendo DS. The use of 3D models, though a bit odd at first, really works nicely with the art style. Even the cutscenes (which are typically in their standard 2D format) pop out and really add a sense of depth with the 3D slider on. The music is beautiful, and like always, really adds a feel to each area you encounter. There isn't much that has changed about the gameplay from the previous entries in the series, you go around solving puzzles in order to uncover a huge mystery. It will feel really familiar to veterans of the series. Also, don't go in expecting much to change with the gameplay, because it hasn't. There are a few minigames of sorts that use the touch screen, but are rare and nothing spectacular. The real appeal to this game is the fact that fans will get a deeper look into Layton's history. The game switches between the present day problem, and a series of events that occurred 18 years prior. The flow was never really an issue, except I wasn't a huge fan of Chapter 6. I won't spoil anything about it, other than it sort of breaks up the flow of the game, in my opinion. Other than that, the story is wonderfully told, and the ending will have you begging to play the last entry. Outside of the main game, you have the minigames that are in your trunk, and though I never got particularly into them, they do add some more gameplay. Also, as in previous games, there are outside puzzles that you can unlock after you complete the game. Plus, Nintendo is releasing puzzles every day for a whole year. This adds up to enough gameplay to make this game well worth your money. Now, an issue I could see with the game is that it doesn't do a great job explaining what happened previously (which could be good, if you want to play the others in the franchise) making it difficult for new players to fully appreciate Layton and Luke. However, all in all, this game is an excellent addition to your 3DS collection, and a must play for any Professor Layton fan. 9/10

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D9
Jul 6, 2011
The original is timeless, and this is perfect proof of that. This game is considered one of the best games of all time, and it surely has stood the test of time. The graphics don't seem to be improved at all, but that is far from true. They upgraded the graphics and character models, but everything is in the same position as the first and feels as the original. The sound and music is excellent, this is one definitely one you should play with head phones. The 3DS speakers don't do it justice. The story is obviously the same, which is simple but perfect. The controls are excellent, with the bottom screen being used as a map and items. It works perfectly, especially when putting Iron boots on and off. It is a bit of a disappointment with the lack of new content, but there is still a lot to do with Master Quest and Boss mode. Just don't expect a whole lot of new stuff. This game is a must play for anyone that hasn't played the original and for anyone that owns a 3DS. It should also be picked up for anyone who enjoyed the original, because it is amazing.

LittleBigPlanet8
Jul 6, 2011
The LittleBigPlanet franchise is unique, cute and fun to say the least. The PS3 version is excellent, and this version being virtually the same is excellent, as well. The graphics are very good for being on a portable gaming system, and the charm is not lessened in any way. The story mode is a bit short, and I managed to collect roughly 90% of the items on the first go around. You can go back and play the levels to increase your high score though. The gameplay is the same as the original and that is a good thing. The platforming is superb and never feels boring. After the story mode, you can go on to download more levels that other players created. The creativity is just exploding in most of the levels. You can also make your own levels as in the first game using the items you collect in the story mode or online. Though I prefer LittleBigPlanet on the console, the portable version is just as fun and should be picked up if you even slightly enjoyed the original or the sequel, or if you never got to experience the original in the first place.

Radiant Historia9
Jul 6, 2011
I regret not paying attention to this game when it was released earlier this year, Radiant Historia is a gem among gaming. It is also a sure sign that the DS has more "great" releases this year than the 3ds. The story is amazing and nothing like I've ever played before. It reminds me of Chrono Trigger, but is more tactical in my opinion. The style and characters are jaw dropping, even though the graphics are only decent. The graphics work though for the system's abilities. The story is like a choose your own story, but ultimately you do have to end it the same way. The music is top notch, actually I recommend playing it with head phones. I was a little disappointed by the lack of voice acting, but the cut scenes were amazing nonetheless. The game is fairly lengthy, clocking in around 35 hours, and there are plenty of side quests. This is by far one of the best JRPG's I've played in years, and it is a must play for any DS, DS lite, or even 3ds owners.

L.A. Noire9
Jun 20, 2011
L.A. Noire shouldn't be confused for a Rockstar game, because it is a Team Bondi game. The concept is something entirely new, and it comes close to Heavy Rain in bringing movies and gaming closer together. Playing as a detective is a lot of fun, and L.A. Noire is probably the best detective game I have ever played. If it wasn't for the music in the background indicating clues, which you can turn off, I felt I was honestly a cop searching for the next lead to solving the case. The story is excellent. Between the flashbacks, the newspapers and the main story, L.A. Noire tells the story not only of Cole Phelps, but of the corruption that plagued L.A at the time, and it all works together quite nicely. The action parts are fun as well, but the detective gameplay really shone though. The best feature of the game is their new technology that allows cameras to capture peoples expressions. It was essential to the interrogation parts I found, and I can't wait to see other games with this new budding technology. The sound, music, voice acting, and real acting for that matter all are perfect in my book. Team Bondi created a beautiful Los Angeles, but I was disappointed in how little to do. Sure, you can search for the film reels, visit landmarks and find newspapers, but not much more than that. The street crimes are repetitive and often times boring. The game was just overall very linear for being an open world game. Aside from that, L.A. Noire offers a lot of fun, and a game that everybody should experience for themselves.

Medal of Honor7
Jun 20, 2011
Medal of Honor tries to do a lot of things, and in some cases succeeds, but that isn't always the case sadly. It is split in to two separate games basically, the single player made by Danger Close and the Multiplayer made by DICE. The single players has a story that is more emotional than other war games and some parts that really made me feel like I was one of the Tier 1 soldiers. The game is very realistic and has quite a few fun moments. Unfortunately, most of the parts in the single player are look and shoot at still enemies. Yes, there are other parts such as an ATV level and a level where you pilot a helicopter, but even then you can't shoot while on the ATV or even steer the chopper. The graphics are very good, for the most part. There were some moments where the frame rate dropped significantly and there were other times texture pop ins were a major issue. But overall, the graphics were great and some textures really shined. The voice acting and sound are fantastic, and the explosion sounds were some of the best parts of the game. If I purely graded the game based on the single player, the game would receive an 8, but due to the multiplayer this isn't so. The graphics are the same from the single player, but it isn't the same game by any means. The multiplayer is class based, which I found ironic because I felt that most everyone sniped or ran out in the open like an idiot. The maps felt very, very small, especially after Bad Company 2. I felt limited to where I could go, mainly because I was. There were countless moments I was told "RETURN TO BATTLE" because I was pushing too much. In my opinion, that shouldn't happen. The main thing that brought this game lower was its length which was way too short. I recommend this game as rent, just to play it, but definitely not a purchase.

Portal 210
Jun 20, 2011
Valve is one of my favorite developers, not just because of their games, but because of their care for their fans. They truly listen, and to top it off, support indie developers with promotional deals like the potato sack. Valve is one rarely to disappoint, and I am glad to say this is their best creation since Half-Life 2. The graphics, though running on the same engine as the original Portal, look incredible with their changing environments. The sound, music and especially voice acting are golden. This is some of the best dialogue and voice acting I have EVER heard in a game, Stephen Merchant especially shines as Wheatley. The story is simple, but memorable, and the environment itself tells the history of Aperture Laboratory. The single player lasted a good 7 or 8 hours, and the co-op mode, which is entirely different from the single player, will tack on another good 4 or 5. The puzzles are fantastic! They are challenging, but never once was I frustrated to the point I got bored or wanted to do something else. All in all, Portal 2 is now at the top of my favorite games ever, and is my new number one from Valve.

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors9
Apr 7, 2011
I was very impressed with Nine hours, nine persons, nine doors. The story was simply enthralling and the characters are some of the most interesting characters I've seen in a video game. First of all, if you don't like story driven games, or reading, then I wouldn't recommend this game, because you will be reading a lot. The art style works and the music goes well too. I kind of wish that they put in just a little voice acting at certain parts, or maybe a few cut scenes that were not push a button and read. Each playthrough probably last around 8 hours, but I guarantee you will want to play it for a different ending. I only played through twice before I got the "True" ending, but I'm sure it could push you past 30 hours if you went for all of them. I highly recommend doing this, because you will appreciate the story the more you know about the characters and the plot. The game, though lengthy, left me thinking and made me want more. I truly hope that Aksys Games decides to continue with the series and maybe make a game similar to this, or perhaps even a sequel. The puzzles in the game are fun and clever, and the story will have you glued to your DS to find out what happens next.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands8
Mar 30, 2011
I am so glad I decided to play this game. I didn't hate the last Prince of Persia installment, I actually enjoyed it, but it didn't nearly live up to the original Sands of Time trilogy. I'm glad to say that Ubisoft returned to the Sands of Time story (I believe this game takes place between the first and second game), and the game is a blast. The graphics are nice, especially during cutscenes. The music is perfect, and the voice acting is top notch. The story isn't extravagant, but it isn't bad by any means. The combat is incredible, especially when you start gaining your different powers. It is fluid and really makes you feel awesome when you are taking down many enemies. The platforming starts pretty easy, but the further you go the platforming and puzzles becoming quite challenging. My only two real complaints with the game are it is short, roughly 6-8 hours. Plus, after you beat the game you unlock a challenge mode, but I finished it in 5 minutes and it doesn't change after the first time. It is the same waves over and over. Although the formula is similar to the Sands of time trilogy and it is quite short, that doesn't mean you should not try out this Prince of Persia. I guarantee you it is just as much fun as the Sands of Time.

Mass Effect 2: Arrival6
Mar 29, 2011
Bioware's latest DLC for Mass Effect 2 is difficult to review for me. For one the gameplay, graphics, dialogue, and sound are all excellent just like the main game. The story is good and does act as a good transition and lead up to Mass Effect 3. The mission is fun and offers a variety of gameplay, from stealth to a survive against waves of enemies. My main gripe with the DLC is how short it is. I played through the entire DLC in around 2 hours, a bit short for 7 bucks. Also, you don't have any of your partners, it's a solo mission. This is a nice change, but I found myself prefering to fight with my comrades. The DLC is good and fun while it last, just don't expect it to last long.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare Pack10
Mar 28, 2011
Rockstar's DLC for one of 2010's top games is one of the best DLC I have ever played on any system. For the $10 I spent on this DLC, I got 12 hours of single player fun and additional multiplayer fun if you choose to go online. The story is cheesy, but in a good way, Rockstar had fun with this title as it manages to include zombies, unicorns, and pokes twisted fun at possible reasons for this zombie apocalypse. The missions are fun and there are plenty of challenges and side quests to keep you entertained. The graphics are just as Red Dead Redemption, just with new enemies, creatures, and the towns are usually in flames now. The music and voice acting are top notch in the DLC, and I only experienced one minor glitch, but it didn't hinder my experience in the slightest. If you so choose, Rockstar has also included a new mode for online that pits you and your friends against oncoming horde waves of zombies, with the difficulty increasing as you go. The multiplayer is just as fun as the campaign, which if you don't do the sidequest or challenges will last probably around 6-7 hours. If you are expecting a serious game about John Marston, you will be disappointed. But if enjoy the cheesiness Rockstar throws at you and can sit back and laugh at the twisted dialogue, then there should be no reason to pass up on this great deal.

Darksiders7
Mar 27, 2011
I only picked up this game due to a recommendation of my friend. It seemed interesting enough, and I could tell it was trying to be like God of War or Zelda. But the key word in that statement is trying. It isn't necessarily a bad game, it just isn't as good as what it tries to be. The story is cool enough. Horserider of the Apocalypse has to fight off enemies. The character designs are awesome, but the graphics were a bit too cartoony for a game like this. That doesn't mean the graphics were bad... just not great. The combat is a bit too mindless, but I will admit that the enjoyment of combat was better the farther I played. The puzzles are Zelda like and fun, but I have seen better puzzle designs. Ultimately the reason the game didn't score higher, was the game got repetitive after a while to me and just lost its enjoyment. The game is relatively long and is enjoyable, but it just wasn't as fun as I had hoped it to be.

Pokemon HeartGold Version8
Mar 27, 2011
I could not wait for this game. I loved the original Gold and Silver games, in fact Pokemon Gold is one of my favorite video games of all time on any system. The game was a masterpiece. Fast forward 10 years later and you get Heart Gold and Soul Silver, and let me just say that Gamefreak truly did the originals justice. The graphics are improved giving it a nice new fresh look. The combat is identical, but don't fix it if it ain't broke. The story and characters (aside from the female character) are exactly the same. I felt rushes of nostalgia when playing through this game, from start to finish. I did not feel the exact enjoyment as the original, but it was still a lot of fun to return to Johto. I believe they could have added more features. The Pokethelon just isn't that much fun and I think they could have enhanced the Wifi features a tad. I also love the feature Gamefreak added by allowing your pokemon to follow you, but they should have added a feature to turn it off for gamers it doesn't appeal to. All in all, Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver is a great game; or should I say, Pokemon Gold and Silver are still great games today, they just look better now on a DS. For veteran Pokemon players and newcomers alike, I highly recommend this game.

Killzone 38
Mar 27, 2011
Killzone 3 is not perfect, but it is a lot of fun. The gameplay is varied throughout the campaign, and this is arguably the prettiest game I have ever played. But the plot isn't as strong as the first 2 Killzones, but it isn't necesarilly bad. I was a little disappointed about how it ended though. The campaign is a decent length for a shooter now a days, and I never felt I was doing the same thing over in it. The cutscenes are beautiful, and the combat mechanics employed in the campaign work really well. The online though is what truly makes Killzone 3 a great game. The class based online is equipped with unlockable perks and ranks just like Call of Duty or Halo Reach, but the difference is it feels more balanced. The weapons you unlock are not necesarilly better, just are better in different situations. I was greatly pleased with this. The games are quick and fast paced and offer a lot of different game types. I experienced occassional issues with the online, but for the most part it ran smoothly. If I purely rated the multiplayer, this game would receive a 10, it is one of the best multiplayers I have played. Sadly, the weaker plot holds this game back a little. Still, this game should not be missed for anyone with a PS3.

Pokemon Black Version9
Mar 26, 2011
I have played the Pokemon games ever since Red and Blue, and I can honestly say this is the best game since Pokemon Gold/Silver. The graphics, while not superb, are a lot better with 3d environments and the sprites of the Pokemon actually do something. The gameplay is unchanged, but that is not a bad thing. I mean its worked so far. The story is actually the best ever in the series. I actually felt at some points that these guys meant business, and they had goals that seemed logical. They didn't include drowning the world with a Kyogre because they like water or something like that. The game is actually very story driven, but that doesn't mean it is linear by any means. Something that is very welcome to the series is the idea that every Pokemon you encounter before the E4 is a new Pokemon. I did not encounter a single Geodude in my entire playing, and it was grand. I honestly could not put the game down for the first two weeks of my purchasing it, it is that much fun. The online capabilities are also drastically improved, now with the ability to do random matches against players and trade with random people, not just put up a Pokemon for auction. The only downside to the game is many of the new designs are hideous, and I don't say that lightly. I saw an ice cream cone and a pile of garbage, which was what was going through my mind when I saw the designs. Now that doesn't mean they all ****, on the contrary, many are excellent. Some of my new favorites such as Sawsbuck and Krookodile are some of the coolest looking Pokemon to date. I just feel that Gamefreak was more intent on quantity (156 new Pokemon), rather than quality when it came to the designs. That being said, many of these designs grew on me by the end of the game, and it really didn't detract that much from the enjoyment of the game. Pokemon Black is arguably the best in the series, and is a great way to get back into the series.

I highly regret not picking this up when it was originally released. Beyond Good and Evil is a great game, and it is sad that it did not sell well when it was released. The graphics have been improved since it was put into HD, and the game runs very smoothly. The cartoon style of the game is enjoyable and works perfectly well. The story is interesting and the characters are enjoyable. The combat is smooth and fluid, and I can see now that this was a pioneer game in combat systems. Ubisoft uses similar combat in games like Assassin's Creed. There are a lot of collectibles and animals to take photos of. The game took me roughly 12 hours to complete 100%, but it is entirely worth it. The game is only $10. If you missed the game when it was originally released, you should definitely check it out now.

Okamiden8
Mar 26, 2011
I picked up Okamiden for two reasons. One, I enjoyed the first Okami a lot, and two, it is the last major DS game to be released before Nintendo's new system. I am glad I picked it up because this is a game that should not be missed. The graphics in Okamiden are excellent for the DS. The art style is beautiful and the cutscenes just look great. The music is also excellent, retaining the Japanese music that truly brings the game to life. The story is arguably the best part in Okamiden. The characters you truly come to like throughout the story, and expect twist in the story before you finish. Be warned though, there are some tear jerking moments in the game. The combat system is relatively unchanged from the first game, except there is a big focus on partner combat. That seems to be a large overlying theme in Okamiden; stick with your partner. Chibiterasu is the new focus of the game, but that doesn't mean you will not encounter old familiar faces. In fact, I find this game more enjoyable if you played the first one. That doesn't mean if you never did you won't enjoy it, just not as much. The game uses the same areas mostly as the first one, so for some it may seem like a rehash of the first game. This is not entirely false, but that doesn't mean Okamiden isn't really enjoyable. I can see why Capcom wanted to put this on the DS. It just seems natural with the Celestial brush as the stylus, and it works really well. It didn't work 100%, but for the majority of the time it was spot on. Even though Nintendo's new system is here, that is no excuse for players to pass up Okamiden.

Dragon Age II8
Mar 26, 2011
It is not fair to give this game a 0-4 score for not being as great as the first Dragon Age game. The game is still good, even if it does not match its predecessor. The graphics are an improvement from the first one. Even though I did have quite a few instances with texture pop in and during cutscenes characters would shake around occasionally, it didn't hamper my enjoyment. The dialogue is excellent, and the characters are memorable themselves. The story, well if you can call it that, is mediocre. Throughout the entire game I kept thinking that the game was just a bunch of sidequests piled together, but I see the game has rather three stories which are divided into three acts. The quest are fun and interesting, but do not really correlate to create an actually "story." The combat is a lot of fun on the consoles. Being faster paced and more involved than the first, which I could see others not liking, improved the experience. All in all, Dragon Age 2 is a very good game, with interesting characters and dialogue, improved graphics, and a more engaging combat system. It is certainly not without flaws due to a few glitches and the lack of a developed story, but Dragon Age II is still a fun game that you should definitely pick up.
