The Forgotten City7
Aug 21, 2021
This is a story focused game. Literally the only combat is an occasional area that you fire your bow in where the enemies take two hits and all they do is rush you if they see you. I never came close to dying by an enemy so you shouldn't either. If that sounds fine with you then keep reading. The premise is you have been transported to a lost ancient Roman city that is cut off from the outside world. AND you are stuck in a timeloop. It is your duty to explore and chat with everybody, discover leads, follow leads, and break the timeloop. The city area is not so big but I think it is the perfect size for this game. I'm going to spitball and say there are about 12 people in the city. The characters and the mystery are enjoyable. The characters will probably not be so memorable in the long run but I imagine the mystery will be. In a game such as this there is a lot of possibility for the little annoyance of needing to repeat your actions everyday if you want to build off of something you previously did. There is no such annoyance here I am glad to tell you. For one, there is a very nice, overly trusting man that will run and do your important errands at the beginning of the loop. Also, all the characters you interact with are totally cool with being blunt and cutting to the chase. There are 4 endings and one of them is THE ending. The others are options but they don't leave you satisfied. So why do I think this game is only a 7 out 10? It is not that the game does anything wrong I just, for whatever reason, don't have any strong feelings toward it. It is good. It is solid. If you like this kind of thing you will enjoy yourself. I enjoyed myself.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim9

This game is essentially a visual novel with some RTS gameplay elements. The RTS elements serve to change up your flow but you would not play this game for the RTS parts. If that is what is piquing your curiosity then this is not the game for you. If a visual novel with an absurdly deep, complicated, and interwoven story is what you are interested in then this is the game for you. There are 13 characters who's stories you will play through. The storytelling can be incredibly hard to keep track of because of the sheer number of characters but also the time jumping and flashbacking. Making sense of the sequence of events, especially as they cross over with over characters is a pain. However after the prologue (about 4 hours into the game) you get access to an “analysis” menu. Here you can review all story elements that you have uncovered in tabs divided by character, chronology and objects. You can also replay scenes from this menu if you want. This will help a lot. Now you may be wondering, does the story payoff? Or is this a Game of Thrones kinda situation. The story absolutely pays off. It is reminiscent of some other sci-fi franchises, which I can not name because that would be too spoilery. If that doesn't bother you AND you are willing to get fully invested into the story then I highly recommend giving this game a shot.

Death's Door9

I heard this game compared to Zelda and Dark Souls, two game series I've never got into. However I absolutely adore this game. Tonally I enjoy the whimsy mixed with dark sensibilities, I honestly wish there were more story beats to the game because I greatly enjoyed the writing. In a couple of the boss areas the bosses make multiple appearances to talk to you and that gives them so much more personality. The gameplay has been "meh"ed. (Yes, I used "meh" as a verb). I very much disagree with that sentiment. When people say that they are saying there isn't much innovation in the gameplay from start to finish. Which is completely true. You do get extra abilities but they are more for puzzle solving and getting around/through terrain. However the combat is very solid and challenging at times. My right hand thumb is in quite sore from the tension of those boss fights and room challenges. DETAILS: You are a silent protagonist , a crow tasked with soul retrieval. In the very beginning you lose a soul and essentially you will die eventually unless you get it back. Also you in an afterworld of sorts? Maybe this is purgatory? I'm not exactly sure. In order to get it back you need to open death's door which only the power of three giant souls will accomplish. The checkpoint system is very well done imo. Your hub area, where you upgrade stuff and occasionally find story side information in is linked to the explorey/fighty world by doors that you uncover as you travel. Between uncovering doors the area between doors is shortened by releasing gates/ladders/etc so if you die it doesn't take too much time to get back to where you were. Also there is no map, which I am told is a Dark Souls thing. This isn't too frustrating as the world feels connected enough for it to be memorable. However because there are some metroidvania elements it would have been nice to mark places you want to go back to once you get the upgrades to traverse the area. Also, the game uses terminology "North, West, etc" but it's a little confusing to tell where directions are because there is no compass and the world is on an angle. It's not super confusing. You can figure out that North is actually Northwest on your screen. Just an itty bitty gripe. Overall I highly recommend this game. Definitely going on my top favorite games of all time somewhere.

One of the best if not the best Co-op games around. Every section has new gameplay gimmicks that are fun and engaging. The variety offered in this game is quite astounding really. The story can be divisive. I liked the back n forth between a divorcing couple AND I really enjoyed some of the darker elements of the story.

Charming game. The dialogue is some of the most realistic between lovers I have seen. Albiet they are still in the honeymoon phase so let that be known. The gameplay is rather simplistic with only two types of damage for the ENTIRE game. I played this alone. Had I played it co-op I might think the need to constantly communicate with eachother was a brilliant design choice. And I do think that... even though I have never done it. If you were to play this with some one it would take a lot of talking during the fight. The strategy won't be deep but... youll be talking. There are numerous questionable design choices such as not being able to chose an enemy to target and not being able to see your health points in battle. Also sometimes the dialogue feels like it is aiding the plot get to where it wants to go instead of feeling completely natural. That being said, the game does a whole ton of world making by dialogue alone. There is no exposition in this game. You literally learn everything by their dialogue. I would love for this universe to expanded on. Maybe a sequel where you are in the Apiary and Kay and Yu are rebel heroes.

I enjoyed taking turns playing this game with a friend. Its pretty straight forward. "Puzzles" are just figuring out how to proceed to the next part. The mechanical challenges are just chase scenes. So nothing is too demanding and you always feel you are progressing with the small satisfactions of feeling like you have overcame something even if it wasn't all that daunting in reality. I don't like horror really but this was a solid good time. However for me I mostly enjoyed it because I played it with a friend. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much playing it alone.

I played it for about 12 hours and put it down. The gameplay got pretty boring pretty quickly. I know the story is supposed to be where the games bread is buttered but I do not feel invested at all in any of the story or characters. I am supposed to care for my sister but I just don't. I feel like this happens a lot in anime things. Like the theory of the story and everything going on sounds good but the story telling/emotion just falls so flat for me. Another character has a really sad story but again. It's sad in theory but in practice I am not moved one bit by it. And I am not an emotionless person. I cry from movies and games. But... anime man. Idk.

I will write this review based on the assumption you already know about the game. So... I loved the party members in the game. I loved building your relationship, chatting at the bar, learning their personal stories piece by piece. Kasuga is also a worthwhile character to move the franchise into the future and his story and the story of Yokohama was really intriguing. However the grinding you need to do in this game is TOO much. I believe grinding to be a design flaw in these types of games and it pains me to see design flaws loving emulated. Despite all that I still think it is a good game. I just think this game could easily be a 9/10 if they balanced it and condensed it a little more. I really did like the combat **** most of the time, until your go to moves basically became animations instead of timed interactions or strategic AoE placements. Also a minor defense of the AoE attacks. So, a common criticism is that all the characters are moving constantly all wily nily like so you can't be strategic with your placement of AoE. Yes... but if you wait and try to predict the movements of the enemies it can be very satisfying when you guess correctly and land a big AoE attack.

A good solid walking simulator. Basically you are exploring your family house which goes back a couple generations and learning about the lives and deaths of these people. In most of the vignettes about your family members you play as them for a brief snippet of time. Some of them change the tone/visual styling of the game which can be interesting. This game wants to be a moving and emotional game. But nothing ever hit me that hard. I can't really say why. This is a game that's quality is defined entirely on how hard the story vignettes hit you. For me it was good, not great.

I'll try to keep this short. The gameplay is fun. Your abilities getting disabled after you use them until you defend and replenish gives the fights more depth. Also timing your strong attacks to be up when your character has a "limitbreak" gives it even more depth. I would recommend any JRPG developer to take a strong look at this system. Where the game falls flat for me is the world and story. So, because this is a game that is supposed to be about 10 hours long and its trying to tell a grander tale than 10 hours would really allow **** result is everything seems pretty shallow. For example, near the beginning there is a revelation that turns your world upside down **** sentences later you are merrily going on your way. Because I play games for story and world immersion this really brings down the game to me. If I cared about the story even a little bit this would be an 8.

Ghost of Tsushima8
Oct 4, 2020
So basically I think it's a great game and I attribute that sentiment to the world of GoT. I just really liked the world. It was a beautiful world to be in and walk around. Rarely do I stop to admire the scenery in triple A games even though games like Uncharted 4 repeatedly tell you to **** do it. However in this game I found myself purposefully walking instead of running just so I could soak it all in. The story is well told. If you know anything about samurai you know they wouldn't be down for sneaking around and stabbing people in the back. Thankfully the story touches on this a lot, more than just a throw away justification. The side characters also have their own side missions that focus on their storyline. Those weren't too interesting to me so frankly didn't finish any of them. My time in the world clocked in around 30 hours I would guess. The gameplay is fun and exciting because successfully parrying is very important as it gives you the ability to heal and do special moves. However the gameplay doesn't really change as your progress. There are duels, which essentially are boss fights, but they are pretty much the same throughout. The enemies are slightly different but overall the same. You have different stances to deal with different enemy types but that also doesn't feel like a noticeable change to the gameplay. I don't have a problem with this but it should be mentioned. Speaking of the boss fights, they are intense! And failure doesn't feel punishing. You start the duel right from the beginning a mere 5 or so seconds after gameover. Actually I kind of wished there was a press X to continue option just so I could collect myself before the rematch. But who can complain about ultra fast load times right?

Dishonored 28
Apr 9, 2020
Dishonored 2 is a great game IF you like stealth or immersive sim games. There are numerous ways to traverse the areas in this game and numerous ways to complete objectives. This really makes the game feel open. My big gripe is that on normal difficulty sneaking can be incredibly difficult. The slightest slip up and you are compromised. Many times I was discovered before I even realized there was somebody around me. You do, later get upgrades (should you choose them) that help alleviate this but it still felt a little annoying. I actually enjoyed the game more when I lowered the difficulty to easy. Another thing that holds the game back is the story. The theory of the story is a lot better than the execution. The story ultimately feels shallow. The beats come to fast without build up and therefore no payoff. It reminds me of GOT Season 8 in that the outline of the story is good but the way it's told falls flat. All that being said I really did enjoy exploring this world.

This game feels a little tackier in tone than the previous games. I think that is because it is told as a fairy tale and when it's not Grimm it's tacky. The overall story does enough to keep you moving forward. I myself feel propelled to play games by reaching story beats and I was sufficiently propelled. The gameplay is a card-based fighting game system, which is the first time I have ever played such a game. It was simple enough for me not to be overwhelmed and gives you enough variation if you feel like experimenting with characters and cards. I stuck with the same 3 characters and overall the same build while making occasional change ups. For seasoned pros of this genre this game may be too simple. However for me it was fine. Overall I didn't like it as much as Heist or Dig 2 but I liked it just fine.

I first tried this game out a couple years back and fell off of it. Even though I liked the humor the music and atmosphere was at times unsettling to me. For some reason now I am totally fine with it and in fact love it now. It actually reminds me of Yakuza games in that it can go from being completely absurd with its humor to gripping with its serious story telling. Characters you run into are either goofball funny, disturbing, horrific, murderous, sociopathic, ****, or a combination. I would have liked the party members to have more of a personality outside the short introduction and level up quotes but I still felt an affinity for them none the less. The game is PAINFUL even in regular difficulty. I don't necessarily mean difficulty of enemies though those can be the case too. Just in the random cases when the game decides to make your life even more annoying by blowing **** up in your face that you couldn't possibly have been prepared for. For instance, when you sleep at a camp fire there is a high likelihood that something negative will happen. Maybe lose your stuff, poisoned, party member kidnapped, etc. Sooooo, I cheesed the game a bit (I fully admit) and would save every time I slept and if I got a back outcome I would reload. In fact I frequently back traveled (with my fast travel truck keys) to rest instead of using resources likes potions because everything feels so valuable in this game. The game is very dark, tonally, and I completely love it for it. The enemy designs are all unique and full of personality. Also some enemies are complete pushovers while others will literally kill your party members (not KO, KILL) if you don't get a little lucky and or kill them first. Overall I highly recommend this game.

About 2 hours to finish. The art design, tone, and characters are likable. The dialogue and texting at times feels very authentic and modern. However I would not say that those things alone make the game worth playing. On the gameplay side it is rather... dull. You have a hole, you swallow things to make the hole bigger to swallow yet bigger things. Sometimes there is a gameplay mechanic which is more interesting in theory than in actual execution. For example, there is one time you need to swallow ingredients to make a fire so you can induce lift off of a hot air balloon. Again, conceptually that sounds like an interesting mechanic but it's rather simple and not engaging. There are numerous moments like that. It isn't until the very end that game starts getting a little more interesting to play. And I mean the very very end. Maybe last 20 minutes or so. Overall I wouldn't recommend the game unless you are completely enamored with the look, tone, and concept of the game (which I know some people are). For me it's about a 6/10

Soooo much boring and clunky driving. The open world in this game is not meant to be played around in. It is meant as a back drop and it's a cool back drop that is just utilized tooo much. You are constantly driving point to point. The actual gun fights you get into are limited but fun as you can quickly die if you are not smart about cover. The fistfights are easily exploitable since you literally can not be hit while you hold block/dodge. The pacing is good, it's not that I wish there were more action I just hated the driving after awhile. The story is quality and probably the best thing about the game.

I never stumbled on the answer of a puzzle by randomly combining objects; the only time I had to confront a guide it turned out my game bugged out and I had to restart. So that aspect is great. I liked the supernatural detective agency feel and the game goes out of it's way to reference lore that makes the world feel fleshed out. Story has some cool/surprising moments and there are multiple endings. Characters feel like real people just with fantastical powers. This game does everything right from a point and click perspective

I think it's an alright narrative experience. So you go around watching recorded events in AR on a spacetation: think pokemon Go but the people are little more than outlines in a solid color. Your main character doesn't talk save for a few lines at the very beginning and very end. It becomes clear why, for story purposes, the developers had to do this. If they had changed that part of story then the main character could have commented on things and I think the game would have been much better for it. However as the game is there were about 2 moments that choked me up a bit. The end didn't really shock me and I think it falls flat. BUT HEY, it's an interesting hour experience.

It's surprising to think this is my fourth Yakuza game. I feel like I just got into the series buying 5, 0, Kiwami, and 6 upon release. Honestly I am experiencing some Yakuza fatigue. Just the ridiculousness of some of the logic people use to justify their actions (usually starting a fight) makes no sense. Also fighting large groups of people is extremely annoying as you are constantly surrounded and getting knocked down. The main story is full of twists and turns, half turns, triple lutz' and about-faces. It's a crazy ride and when it ends you can't even remember how it started. What I loved about the Yakuza series is the convoluted storylines, zany side missions, and walking around in Japan. This is all still here in 6 but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as 0. I hope they make some changes to the formula. One complaint I have is that side missions while interesting to watch are not interesting to play (no, Im not talking about the mini-games). All side missions follow this structure: 1.Listen to somebody's story. 2. random street fight. 3. Revelation and end. It's not that I don't like the Yakuza series but after playing so many in such a short period of time the flaws start to get to you.

Costume Quest7

This game is pretty good but I actually enjoyed it a lot more than "pretty good" would entail. I enjoyed it like what "real good" would entail. Why? It doesn't do anything to annoy me. Everything is really streamlined. You don't manage equipment, you don't pick stats, you don't worry about items, your health goes back to max after every fight, and there are no random encounters. Anything that could be a bother is striped from this game. All you have to concentrate on are the battles and your party's costumes (Class?) Many will call it dumbed-down but frankly I liked that about it. It was a breeze to play. The story is mediocre, the characters are ok, the dialogue is fine, but the tone is what I really dug. The tone and the look. You're just a gaggle of kids on a easygoing adventure fighting goblins and ghouls. It's pretty cool.

SteamWorld Dig 28

The upgrades in this game drastically change how you play. It's pretty cool and ends up kinda becoming a metroidvania as a result. I like the tone of the game but the characters aren't as memorable as Steamworld Heist especially the towns people. Story is simple, I think one more plot point would have made it feel like a complete arch. Exploring the mines though is where it's at. Digging around trying to find a path to your objective and making sure to get loot on the way is the core of the game. There is combat but it's a side dish. I do want to point out that I think the light mechanic is unnecessary. So, you have a lantern and fuel runs out pretty quick usually before you even have a full bag of loot to sell. What happens when it runs out is that the surrounding area gets really dark. It's cumbersome but you could power through it if you want. Or just go back to town. There's really no purpose in watching your fuel meter because the punishment for running out is so minimum. If they made it so you couldn't survive long without light and forced you to make sure you were near a checkpoint (tube back to town) while running low that could have been an interesting mechanic. What's funny is that this whole mechanic only exists in the early game because eventually you can get an upgrade so your fuel never runs out. So, what was the point in having it in at all? Idk. Minor gripe. Also the end was super frustrating! But I did feel really good after beating it. Good game. Recommended 7.5/10

Stories: The Path of Destinies6
Jul 17, 2017
Pros: -Action is simplistic but fun for the short time the game lasts relying on smashing and countering. Neutrals: -The narrator is alright, definitely not on the level of Bastion, and the writing for him is mediocre. -branching stories/alternative paths is a cool idea but nothing interesting comes from it. Cons: -Some of the story logic seems like it was written by an unmotivated high school student. -The level design is very generic. Just a connection of small floating platforms and the ones with more room will spawn enemies
