Halfway into this season and I finally gave up on "True Blood". Middle-Eastern revenge smoke monsters were my limit. However, more than a year later I decided to hate-watch this show until the very end and I was pleasantly surprised - the second half of this season is actually pretty good. The show actually focuses on something. The show's themes about religion and gays are back too. And it's also fun. I'd give the first half a 2 and the second half an 8.

It was quite painful to watch this fourth season, to be honest. Week after week I hoped to see something that would actually matter. Every single one, I repeat EVERY SINGLE ONE of "True Blood's" episodes ends with a cliff-changer and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is solved within the first 5 seconds of the next episode and then the show just moves on like that never happened. I mean if you watch some show for 4 seasons you'd except some development or maturity? P.S. Thank Lilith that this is the only season with witches in it.

The more I think about it the more obvious it's gonna get - this is the season when it started to go wrong. Characters such as Sam and Tara were cut off from the main story and got some weird personal things to do. And the season's main arc itself went to nowhere as the season progressed. It's gonna sound weird, but what "True Blood" should have done in this season (Which itself isn't bad, but affects the rest of the show) is to actually kill of some unimportant characters to make it feel like something matters or is at stake.

This is the best season of "True Blood". It's just over the top crazy-fun, but at the same time, it manages to pull out some emotional scenes as well (Episode 9 ends on a particularly sad note). The major theme of the season is religion mockery, (The Fellowship of the Sun & Maryann's craziness) but there is also enough relationship drama, blood, sex, humour and gore - all presented in a fun way only this show knows.

"True Blood" has never been the best show on television, but man, the first couple seasons were really enjoyable. All stories were connected, whether thematically or plot-wise. People's relationships actually mattered. There were some nice metaphors about religion and homosexuality. Anna Paquin gave one of the tv-s best performances. But above everything else, in its early days, watching "True Blood" was fun and that made up all of its occasional silliness. I personally wish the show had stayed the way it was in its first seasons.
