Not nearly as bad as most reviews would suggest, however this show can easily be picked apart if you try to. There is a decent sci-fi disaster plot, though if it doesn't progress and give viewers some answers over time I can see how it might lose what little audience it has.

Once again the critics fail to "see" a good show even when it smacks them in the face. Jason Mamoa rocks every episode of this visually stunning fantasy adventure. The plot is original, gripping, and my only complaint is I have to wait for season 2 to find out what happens next.

This is the best sci-fi series since BSG. It's just a shame that Syfy killed it with poor scheduling and rebranding of the network. If a more mainstream network had picked this show up instead, we'd probably be looking at another 10 seasons of Stargate. While I'm a fan of SG-1 and SGA, I feel that SGU was definitely the best, though sadly the shortest lived of the three. SG-1 was a bit campy, which seems to be what people miss the most that are harshly rating SGU with a "0" score. I'm not sure where it's written down that sci-fi is supposed to contain bucket loads of comedy, but I don't subscribe to that view. Goodbye SGU, those of us that are true Stargate and sci-fi fans will miss you dearly!

While it's obvious that Merlin is firmly in the "family oriented" department, it never seems to hinder my enjoyment of the show. It's difficult to find a fantasy or sci-fi series these days that doesn't get ripped apart by critics or canceled due to ratings without ever having a fair shake. If you like epic fantasy, dragons, or swords & sorcery, you'll probably find at least a little enjoyment from this show. Good clean fun for the whole family.
