Dune: Part Two0
Mar 5, 2024
Not gonna lie, it failed to meet even my low expectations for a big dumb action movie. Was actually very light on action, just lots of scenes of women talking about their feelings while men and Zendaya scowling sullenly (it's the only expression she can make). Has nothing to do with Frank Herbert's brilliant novel of the same name.

LOOOOOL DPO only get $40 million in its opening weekend, that's 20% less than the 12th Halloween movie did in its opening!!!! What a financial catastrophe for Warner, now they have to decide whether to torch another $100 million plus making the sequel, or suffer the humiliation of cutting their losses and leaving this terrible half-movie flapping in the breeze!

It's weirdly like an Avengers movie in that they spend a ton of time flitting from planet to planet looking for a glowing magic orb. To be clear, that isn't a compliment, make an original movie you dumbs! Other than that it's just bland and pointless. The new characters all **** and the one piece of good news is that none of them are coming back for future projects.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice10

Superb movie, for once we actually get a crossover hero movie that lives up to the promise and delivers larger-than-life operatic conflict. Cavill is superb as Supes, a paragon of earnest nobility struggling against a messy and fallen world, and Affleck is simply a revelation as the Dark Knight. For my money his performance here is the best the character has ever been protrayed: genuinely frightening and intimidating, motivated by ungovernable rage. The critics are dumb, and people who throw around words like "grimdark" are just allegic to actual drama and tension (they want movies to all be cheesy mind-numbing sitcoms where the throwaway CGI villain gets dispensed with in between dorky one-liners). BvS is one of very few superhero movies that actually succeeds as gripping cinema, not just as a lowest-common-denominator summer tentpole.

Dull, inept, and pandering. Peele has clearly found his niche of inject warmed-over social justice pablum into horror movies (traditionally the most amateurish genre, with the least-discerning fans) and it's working for him financially, but this is the kind of on-the-nose movie people will be embarrassed about once the current #woke fad is just a painful memory in a few years' time.

Shocked to see this rated so low. It's a tense, twisty, gorgeously shot action thriller with way more cinematic talent behind it than 95% of the shlock Hollywood makes these days. It does a great job of bringing Mann's usual themes (professionalism in the face of danger, honor amongst thieves, crime as operatic conflict of good vs. evil) and brings them into the modern era with one of the most realistic portrayals of hacking as a tool of theft and terrorism ever committed to film. Hemsworth is great as a classic brooding, masculine, Mann-style tough-guy protagonist, and the Chinese brother/sister duo helping him are some of the more believable and charismatic Asian stars I've seen. The music, atmosphere, and cinematography are all painfully good. Sure it's not a super-deep story (though by the end it succeeds at transcending the basic "will they catch the bad guy" premise it starts out with), but it has heft and craftsmanship like a Kimber 1911. Ignore the critics and give this one a watch!

Solo: A Star Wars Story0

I should've gone to see Deadpool 2 instead... Solo is a boring, pointless movie that further confirms that Disney is just in this for the money, and is trying to pander to audiences with cheap nostalgia while simultaneously disrespecting and "deconstructing" everything that was good about the original movies. The guy playing Han is a total lightweight, Lando is a prancing fairy, and whats-her-name from Game of Thrones is just forgettable. The droid is worst of all though. I'm calling it: no one who is a real Star Wars fan could possibly like this movie, or Disney

Just seemed like another Pixar also-ran, like they've been having more and more of in recent years. Nothing special or memorable, and I have to say the multikult pandering is pretty unwelcome too. Mexico is perfectly capable of making their own movies about their culture, they don't need American studios to use them as a diversity totem.
