The Diplomat (2023)10

Terrific dialog and pacing reminiscent of The West Wing (same writer). Some of the story lines are a bit far fetched, but still entertaining. The acting is first rate. I can only hope they have future episodes planned.

Poker Face (2023)6

Reminds me of the old Ellery Queen show where they gave you the clues and Jim Hutton would break the fourth wall and ask, “Have you solved it yet?” In this case they drop a heavy-handed, non sequitur clue you can only miss if not paying attention. Kind of takes the fun out of the detection part! The lead is quirky, but she’s not compelling. Good actors helped the premier.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey10

It’s valid to say the premise borrows heavily from Flowers for Algernon. However, using that as a springboard the miniseries takes the story to great heights. Samuel Jackson gives a phenomenal performance, nuanced and credible. The remainder of the cast is also exemplary. The range required of Mr. Jackson to bring this story home is especially challenging but that challenge is fully met. Not really a mystery, but more of a character story and an analysis of what family really means and that it’s never to late to accomplish a life of value. The race for several Emmys starts here. Mr. Jackson performance particularly is one for the ages.

Reacher10

Hands down the best new show this year. Exceptional acting, dialog worthy of Sorkin and a solid story line. It has just enough humor to lighten a violence heavy storyline. A big endorsement of the person who did the casting as opposed to the nitwit who cast Tom Cruise as Reacher in the movies. If you can accept a high body count you’ll enjoy this show immensely.

Strong acting and solid plots make this worth a look. Season 2 is actually better than season one though Christopher Plummer just has a minor role. In season one he was outstanding.

Nice easy flowing show with good mix of fantasy & action. The young women lead displays the proper amount of amazement to make the story credible.

Slightly uneven but if you haven’t seen the gynecological exam in episode 2, you’ve missed a classic. Be patient. There fun in every episode so far.

Departure: Season 18

Punjabi shines in this multiple misdirection thriller. Keep your eye on the pea. The acting is all first rate. It borrows a little from Fate is the Hunter, but not egregiously. The plot is tight though in the end the conclusion is slightly unsatisfying. This seems like a springboard to a potentially interesting series.

Vienna Blood8

Reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. Vienna at the turn of the century was the center of European intrigue. This intelligent, complex set of mysteries is a good investment of time. The characters are well-drawn. The dramas crosses all the economic classes of the period, encompassing a wide political spectrum.

Alternatino with Arturo Castro: Season 19
Sep 10, 2019
Very creative comedy that uses a running theme through vignettes throughout the show. The are smaller skits interspersed among the vignettes. It also provides a nice window into how Latin culture intertwines into the mainstream. If you have “On Demand” run episode 1. The first skit will hook you.

Pennyworth: Season 19

Like Gotham it has the same writer and features bizarre villains. It has more twists & turns than a mountain roads. You can never be certain what will happen next. If you liked Gotham you’ll enjoy following this. It’s deliciously dark. I bought EPIX just for this show. It’s that good.

Homecoming2

A sad waste of acting talent. The ending has no payoff. A trip to the Tampa Tribune office is one obvious thought. It’s a shame because they had a decent core idea, but the pace was so slow the writer was apparently too exhausted to craft an ending.

Midnight, Texas: Season 29

Surprisingly inventive. Nice character development. Good fantasy fun. Acting is above average for this type of genre. The second season is stronger than the first but they need more grandma.

Better Late Than Never: Season 19

Just think silly and let yourself go. If your ever wondered who these guys were this is the time to find out. It’s sophomoric and wonderful all at the same time. These guys really have have affection for each other and it seems very genuine. Finally you get to see unusual parts of the countries they visit that never makes the travelogues. I know it seems weird, but give it a try.

Underground: Season 11
Mar 16, 2016
This show had so many historical and logical flaws I had to quit during episode1. Captured slaves attempting to escape are put in a cabin with a nice fire going. Why wouldn't they burn a hole in the cabin. Then one slave has written detailed instructions for another. Since it was typically a crime to teach a slave to read this seemed highly improbable. Okay subject but inferior treatment.

Lucifer: Season 19
Mar 2, 2016
Nice tongue in cheek humor and certainly an original concept. The acting is charming with a little of the typical mismatched romantic situations. There enough action to drive the story, it's not the main focus of the show.

The Librarians (2014): Season 19

Fun, family fare with an engaging cast. It's a shame they didn't do this when Newhart was available, but it's still a nice watch. I wonder if the Brisco County Jr. fans will find it.
