The Forest3
Jan 10, 2016
Well folks, this film was a painful reminder that it's January. This is the worst movie of 2016. I'm not saying this because the kids in front of me checking snapchat, instagram and even mocking the Japanese people talking in the film. I just genuinely hated the movie. Aside from Natalie Dormer's performance and and a few cool scenes. There isn't any point in watching this movie. The acting was annoying especially since the actors don't work well with each other each other at all except for Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney. Their back and forth was at least watchable but for everyone else. I just wanted them to die! I was hoping the suicide demons would be like “Hey, come over here!” The actions and choices the characters made were unrealistic and clearly only made to keep the movie moving because if these characters were thinking logically the movie would've been like 10 minutes long and how awesome would it have been if this was a short film. The director has made many shorts in the past and the movies plot was stretched out to such an extent so I think making this a short would've been the better choice. There is a difference with having a formula that causes you to hit a part in the plot that would be deemed predictable once or twice. That's perfectly fine but having such a fully loaded agenda with nothing but cliches and annoyingly obvious jumpscares ruling the movie doesn't add anything good! It just takes away the audience and annoys everyone in the auditorium. In the end, The Forest was an obnoxious film with annoyingly obvious plot devices. The cinematography was good and there were some cool scenes but everything else made me cringe. Not a good start to 2016. I'm giving this one a 3.5/10.

The Hateful Eight9
Jan 1, 2016
Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite writer/directors of all time so I was jumping on the hype train for this movie... And they hype paid off. For everyone who is looking forward to this movie and are afraid that it might be bad. Don't worry because it is awesome although very different from Tarantino's usual style of film. The Directing and Acting is amazing but the screenplay is something to behold. In my opinion, this is probably my second favorite screenplay from Quentin Tarantino. Involving twists, turns and great dialogue that you would only expect from the masters of film. The movie didn't really follow any specific or any formula for that matter. I haven't seen any film like this in my entire life. Throughout the entire run time of the film (which is two hours and forty-eight minutes btw) there is a certain tension in the air the entire especially in the second half of the film and it doesn't let go. The film grabs your attention and refuses to let go. The film isn't necessarily fast paced but the constant peril of every single character is quite a thrill. Only one con, Channing Tatum felt incredibly miscast. I respect Tarantino and everything he has created except for this. I couldn't stand seeing him on screen. He gave a decent performance but just felt so out of place. In the end, The Hateful Eight is one of my favorite films of the year and will definitely be one I will check out when it comes out New Years Day. I'm giving this one a 9.5/10.

Krampus6
Dec 20, 2015
I can honestly see this movie being a cult classic. I can see people watching this movie every year on Christmas eve/day and I know that's what I'm going to do. What can I say? It's a fun “B” movie for the holidays. First off with the good, the movie is paced decently for the first half but then it gets absolutely claustrophobic in the last act. Everything goes down and it feels way too rushed. I liked Adam Scott's performance as well as the rest of his family. Although they are playing cliched characters they pull it off pretty nicely. As well as their back and forth. All in all. Adam Scott and his family are one of the best parts of the movie. Watching the minions attack the family (especially the gingerbread men and the jack in the box guy) was entertaining. I wouldn't say it's horrifying but it is entertaining enough to keep audiences entertained. And now for the bad. I just wanted the In-Laws to get eaten by Krampus and his minions. JeremyJahns said it best “It's like the other family from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation but with all the likability taken out of them” and that is exactly what they are like because these people are **** They are **** to such an extreme degree that It just took me out of the movie a little bit. Also, **** white people are ****! It felt like some people were suicidal and It just made me angry watching them (SPOILERS) one of the best examples is when they are running towards a snowplow to escape and find people. The mom goes to this son and is like “I love you, goodbye” and basically jumps into one of those five nights at Freddy's monsters. It becomes increasingly apparent that this all happens for a reason and It's because of an ending that I honestly have no feelings about. I thought it was going to be a ending that I could respect but know. Typical Hollywood “B.S”. (SPOILERS) The movie also relied strongly on the minions basically Krampus isn't really the main antagonist. It's more centered around his family just screwing things up. So, just call the movie “Minions.” Oh, wait. That might not be a good idea. In the end, “Minions” was a pretty enjoyable movie. It nails the claustrophobia element of being trapped in a house with the chance of dying at any moment but also can be a bit repetitive at parts. I'm giving this one a 6/10.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip3
Dec 20, 2015
What can I say except for this movie was awful! Did you guys seriously expect me to say that this was a good movie. It's not even so bad it's good it's just so bad it's cringey. That's one word to use while describing this movie “Cringey”. Some of the jokes were so bad/painful that I would get frustrated. Most notably the Baby Got Back cover. If you couldn't tell, this is a road trip movie where to have to get to point A to point B in a certain amount of time and the chipmunks are doing this to stop Dave from marrying his new girlfriend and prevent getting an annoying step brother Miles. So, they are supposed to gain a meaningful relationship along the way, right? Well, not exactly. There relationship doesn't grow overtime. It just goes from I hate you to I love, just like that... I'm not even exaggerating that. That is literally how it happens. The acting was god awful. Except for Jason Lee, he was decent. But, everyone else, especially Bella Thorne couldn't act for anything! I don't think even the cheap cameos (Redfoo, probably got him on for like 10 cents) could save this movie. In the end, listen to my good friend and go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens instead. I'm seeing it tomorrow so I don't know if it's good or not yet but he's a cool guy so take his word for it! I'm giving this one a 3/10.

Sisters6
Dec 20, 2015
Two sisters decide to throw one last house party before their parents sell their family home. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are making a movie together? Awesome! Although, this movie wasn't awesome it was still a pretty fun time. It doesn't work too well as a comedy mainly this is sadly due to the fact that a lot of the funniest parts were in the trailer. But there is still enough substance for you to not feel completely robbed. This is obviously a given but Tiny and Amy's chemistry together was so believable and real that you don't feel like you are watching characters interact and humans instead. The comedic timing was a bit off. There are times where certain scenes were stretched out to such an extent that the punchline/joke just became annoying. There is one running gag that really annoyed me and it involved one of their friends from their childhood thinking he's funny and he kept making these painfully bad jokes. I usually love awkward humor but it just felt a little forced. But is this movie funny? That's the biggest question, will you laugh throughout this movie. Yeah, I had a good time with this movie and was bursting out laughing at times. In the end, Sisters was a good time! Some of the jokes feel flat and when they do, they do really hard. But, I didn't go into this movie thinking it would be the next Birdman. I'm giving this one a 6.5/10.

American Hero5

Melvin, a reluctant Superhero, lives only for crime, women and drugs - until he realizes that the only way he will ever get to see his estranged son is to go straight and fulfill his potential as a crime fighter. Honestly, I quite enjoyed this movie at parts. I say parts because I enjoyed this movie until it gets painful and all you are left with is the bad acting and humor. Aside from Stephen Dorff and Eddie Griffn, they carry a lot of the movie so it's important that they have enough chemistry and charisma to carry it... And they do... And it works really well! Watching them on screen working together was very entertaining, But when they aren't together and they are left with either his boring cliche family or his boring cliche friends and it's annoying. Speaking of cliches, this movie hits every single one. The setup, the fallout and the second chance sequences all hit every single cliche and even if it doesn't make any sense everything ends all happy and cheerful even though it doesn't deserve it. The pacing goes everywhere! It's insanely fast and chokes you with energy at one part. But, then it would become a total snooze and nothing happens. Literally the first 40 minutes we find out he has superpowers and an estranged child but that was in the trailer so nothing new happens. Now that I'm thinking about it, if you haven't seen the trailer and thinking this movie has a cool premise and want to check it out in theaters than please don't watch the trailer. It literally spoils the entire movie. In the end, I found this movie to be enjoyable although it was all over the place but I enjoyed it for what it was trying to do. I'm giving this one a 5/10.

In the Heart of the Sea6
Dec 13, 2015
Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a giant whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. I'm happy to say that this movie was surprisingly good! Sure, the pacing was slow and at a few parts it got dull. But away from that I though it was a fun watch. The movie's build up was long, It took almost the entire movie to get to the actual meat of the film. The acting wasn't phenomenal but was most definitely watchable especially the ones from Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland. For the time they are on screen together, they have a very watchable chemistry. The whole Mentor and Mentee thing going on between them is quite enjoyable. The cinematography and visual effects were absolutely breathtaking. Every time you see Moby **** destroying the ships and wrecking havoc is just tension filled and heart pumping. The darker twist in the movie was supposed to cause “oh's” and “ah's” but I didn't see it. It felt forced into cause drama but just like Legend. You can't take it out of that true story because it is a true story and people would feel cheated. In the end, This movie was surprising. The setup went on a little too long and the writing was weak at times but besides that, beautiful. I'm giving this one a 6/10 (a positive 6/10).

No Escape5
Dec 9, 2015
This plothole riddled mayhem flick starring Owen Wilson and the two worst child actors I've seen all year. Doesn't build any tension because of it being the cliche hollywood remake. It doesn't care about it's characters because you are supposed to care for them because Owen Wilson has kids... I guess? This movie is a fun cheese fest that you can watch with a bunch of friends and have a good time but it is far from perfect or ten out of ten flawless

I personally didn't like this movie as much as everyone else. I'm not saying I absolutely hated the movie and I know some fan boys will see this and get extremely mad at my 7/10 rating because I guess all true “Oscar bait” stories are 10/10 flawless. But, I had flaws with this movie so why would I give it a 10/10? Maybe I'm just that one **** that hates every single movie to ever come out. Anyways, onto the review. First off, the performances of the main cast are phenomenal, they are absolutely phenomenal. Mark Ruffalo, (especially) Micheal Keaton and Racheal McAdams give exceptional performances that will leave you in awe. Those performances also mixed with the chemistry and at time exciting dialogue. I say “at times” because at times the pacing is slow and it seems that at that exact same time that the filler scenes/jokes come in. When I say jokes I legitimately mean jokes. They try to make such a dark tale a comedy to such an extreme extent to where you start to notice the pauses where people were supposed to laugh. In the end, what can I say? It was Oscar Bait but it was Oscar Bait done right.

Creed8

I had a lot of fun with this movie. At first I thought it would be just a plain old cash grab with A-list actors to see tickets and spit on the name of the rocky movies but no. It's a well directed, well paced and very emotional boxing film. Ryan Coogler is a very talented director. He has a very strong attention to detail and emotion just like his last movie “Fruitvale Station”. I remember watching that movie and it just made me aggravated about the police and racism. The movie turned me into a radical I wanted to do something about it and Ryan Coogler does not fail to bring that same emotion to screen here. At times the movie can be very heart-breaking and intense especially in the boxing sequences. But, it can also have a light and strong heart bringing hope and cheer to the audience and characters. The only thing I can hope for is that there isn't a Creed 2 because with this movie making 30M and the talk of it in interviews there most likely will be. But, I hope the studios will have the decency to respect the franchise and the fact that there really isn't anywhere to go but down after this movie wraps everything very well. One of the cons I had with the movie was that even though it's formula was somewhat original. It managed to hit almost every cliche in the book and have characters act irrational so that the second act can movie into the third. The movies I enjoy are the ones where the characters don't act completely different and everything is so convenient to the plot so that the movie can movie along. But with all that said I think that this is a pretty solid rocky movie

Legend8
Dec 9, 2015
It's hard to make the perfect crime film. After Goodfellas, The Departed and The Godfather Part II It's extremely hard to make a perfect mob movie. But legend did an exceptional job. It's not perfect but I can easily say that it's one of the better films in theaters right now. The acting was amazing! Tom Hardy did an amazing job getting into both of his roles as Ron and Reggie Kray. I haven't seen an actor fulfill both his roles so well and with both characters personality's being almost completely different. It's quite an achievement on Tom Hardy's part. Ron Kray's romance side plot felt like it was used only to fill up time. It could have been done better but I can't complain about it that much because it's a true story and I would probably criticize it more if it wasn't included in the movie but It just felt so forced and unneeded. This movie is very dialogue driven and there aren't explosions going on all the time but the dialogue is so captivating that you just get lost in the movie ear/eye candy. I say ear/eye because not only is the screenplay phenomenal but the cinematography even more so. You always feel like you are in 1960's London and never in present day. In the end, legend was pretty awesome. The Writing, chemistry, directing, cinematography and acting are spot on. Some parts did drag on and it was a bit longer then it should've been but besides that. Awesome! I'm giving this one an 8.5/10

The Green Inferno3
Dec 9, 2015
Eli Roth's newest gorno flick has some intense moments. But, The terrible acting and even worse jokes can make this movie unbearable at times. If you've come for the blood only skip to the last half of the movie because when the characters are just talking the movie is boring. It's offbeat pacing doesn't work at all even without the slow build up.
