As the title implies, Orna’s love never wavers, but the shocks and the questions linger long after the credits are done rolling. Which is to say “Unconditional” is smart, the type of thing you have to give your full attention to (particularly if, like me, you’re reading the Hebrew and Russian subtitles).

“Unconditional” certainly loses something when it leaves behind emotional realism, though Chamami — who never plays Orna’s panic as hysteria, but as quiet confusion — remains a steady anchor throughout. Yet it’s also easier for “Unconditional” to stand on its own once it sheds some of the baggage that comes with dramatizing an encounter between two embattled nation-states.

Unconditional tries to be more than it is, which is a pretty conventional thriller. But the “message-y” parts of the show don’t get in the way all that much, and the story builds tension very well.

A hyper-smart, action-packed thriller with a broken heart. A mother rampages across the globe to save her jailed child, closing her eyes like Odysseus on his ship, because seeing her daughter for who she truly is would break her.

I’d love to say this show is pure fun, but it’s actually so much more than that. At its core, it’s a deeply personal story about family and relationships in a thriller wrapping. The main character, a mother of a young adult, is thrust into the spotlight to save her daughter from a wrongful arrest all while uncovering troubling signs that her kid might not be as innocent as she thought. I'm three episodes in, and I can't wait to see where it goes.
