Though it falters during a second half that’s filled with prolonged detours and excessive self-congratulation (not to mention few answers to its central questions), it proves an intimate look at women’s struggles to have their voices heard.

Barter is never portrayed as anything but a strong, determined seeker — again, quite complimentary to the subject, but ultimately a little one-dimensional. The Truth About Jim walks alongside Barter quite competently, but it never makes that turn into creative subjectivity. We’re left on the outside, craning our necks, trying to get closer.

I won’t give away the ending and I don’t want to be mean about this fractured family. But, honestly, I cannot recall a longer, more disappointing slog. Truly, there were SO many better uses of my time and that’s on ME for not clicking on to something more worthy. Oof. I love true crime documentaries and was quite disappointed in this silly one.
