“RJ Decker” delivers exactly what you want out of this kind of show. Mysteries that wrap up with the satisfaction of completing a 500-piece puzzle. Characters with depth, charisma, and chemistry. A unique setting that colors it all.

Like its titular character, RJ Decker is a little rough around the edges, but it has a lot of potential.

Decider
Once the awkwardness of setting up R.J. Decker‘s puzzle pieces ends, we see the potential for it to be a fun, quirky case-of-the-week detective series that will concentrate on its characters’ stories as much if not more than the weekly case.

ABC’s “RJ Decker,” is a solid crime procedural with an unlikely investigator at its center.

The show has a light, quirk-friendly tone it shares with its Tuesday night procedural partners “Will Trent” and “High Potential,” also on ABC, and if you’re the sort who likes to let a network play straight through prime time, this is a good place to park.

It’s got the same Florida-is-weird vibe as “Bad Monkey” and the short-lived “Maximum Bob.”

The premiere’s mystery feels a touch too gloomy and predictable, but the second episode’s is entertainingly twisty. .... What RJ Decker does not have, however, is a convincing lead.

R.J. Decker has a great crew and the perfect Florida setting for a detective show. It reminds me of a mix between Magnum P.I., with that sunny private eye vibe, and Burn Notice, where a guy who lost his job helps out regular people while dealing with local crooks. If the leads keep hitting it off like they are now, we might even get some of that Moonlighting energy in the next few episodes.

I liked it. I think all the characters fit together well; the interaction between them feels organic. The main character is likable, the one who put him in jail is likable, and it seems like they're going to be a couple. Nicer stories can be explorated.
