Vinterberg’s writing and direction, and most of the performances, are sufficiently understated that the drama works on you, and by the last episodes the physical and psychological travails of the fleeing Danes have real force.

Fascinating and infuriating in equal measure and ultimately oddly moving, for all its flaws, Families Like Ours pulls you into its emotional slipstream and won’t let go.

While the evacuation aspect of Families Like Us makes us almost as queasy as one of the characters became while hearing that news, it does set up an interesting circumstance to explore family bonds and how they change in extreme situations.

It doesn’t preach, it does have the themes work through the characters instead of the other way round (and has a cast stuffed with Danish heavyweights to help it). But it all feels a bit thin, a bit bloodless – like a thought experiment made flesh rather than a compelling, provocative drama.

This series is set in Denmark after it’s been announced that the entire country must be evacuated due to rising water levels. This is NOT a sci-fi thriller, but a drama that revolves around several families as they cope with their journey, literally. Accomplished writer/director Thomas Vinterberg has penned a screenplay that’s subtly powerful, while assembling an exceptional group of actors. As many European films do, it moves slowly at times while establishing the situations. Some of the character’s decisions seem dumb, but that makes their plights even more frustrating. The exploration of family bonds proves challenging as they react to extreme situations. Despite its flaws, this series tells a quietly compelling story that ultimately makes a captivating statement about the power of love and the future of our world.
