It is stripped of the more frivolous and soap opera-like storytelling tendencies of the flagship. At its core is a family fighting for a future. While Beth and Rip's love story is the show's backbone, it's rich with new narrative opportunities that could make the franchise more expansive.

The most straightforward and satisfying franchise entry since the original.

Reilly consistently delivers the more compelling performance. It’s unlikely “Dutton Ranch” will make as big a splash as “Yellowstone” did – sequels rarely do – but there’s enough similar storytelling that this show will either satisfy “Yellowstone” fans craving more or bore them to tears because it all seems so familiar.

Dutton Ranch is solid enough, but displays signs of franchise fatigue.

Yellowstone had slightly run out of steam and this is the same mix of brutality and soapy camp transplanted (literally) to pastures new.

The property may go by a different name, but we’re very much back on the ranch.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are magnetic as Beth and Rip. Their chemistry feels even richer now..still intense, but with a deeper, more lived-in warmth that’s impossible to take your eyes off of. They anchor this show perfectly. The supporting cast is outstanding too. Annette Bening and Ed Harris bring serious presence and instantly elevate the new Texas setting. The story is engaging right from the start, full of fresh conflict and unexpected turns, while the sweeping Texas landscapes are absolutely gorgeous. Dutton Ranch delivers exactly what Beth & Rip fans have been craving for years.

La primera temporada de Dutton Ranch ofrece un drama que mantiene la esencia del universo de Yellowstone, combinando conflictos familiares, luchas por el territorio y personajes marcados por decisiones difíciles. Desde el primer episodio queda claro que la serie apuesta más por el desarrollo de sus protagonistas que por la acción **** de sus mayores aciertos es la construcción del ambiente. I love the family story, from Yellowstone, 1823, 1883 and now Dutton Ranch...also I'll mention Marshals. Attention to detail is important...example: S1E9 the first cow was enough to start taking action, why y'all standing around watching? And Beth isn't as bad ass as before. Rip is still badass but Rip would have never let Carter disrespect Beth. Example...Beth: "Carter is still not speaking to me." And Beth "protecting Carter" from knowing about the Dutton Ranch herd? Why? Is he a young cowboy as well as part of the family? Weak. Com'on...bring the badassery back.

This is the latest spinoff from Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” series, all of which I’ve loved (my review). It takes up at the end of the original show, when 3 of the remaining characters leave their beloved Montana for Texas: The powerhouse daughter (Kelly Reilly), her devoted husband and ranch manager (Cole Hauser) and their adopted son (Finn Little). Reilly’s fearless performance drives the show, while Hauser provides the solid tough center and Little emotes innocence. The tough men and even tougher women also include Annette Bening as the competing owner and Ed Harris as the very involved vet. In addition to the culture differences, they run into the expected obstacles, the biggest being the main ranch in the area (owned by Benning’s character). The sharp dialogue and sometimes surprising plotting keep this interesting, while the all-around forceful performances make it even more effective. As per usual, the gorgeous cinematography and montages of cowboy activities add some country warmth. Showrunner Chad Feehan has followed Sheridan’s signature style with stakes that get more daring and drama to match. It’s a continual struggle to keep this out of melodrama territory, but the assured filmmaking helps.

I was surprised when they took the least two likeable characters from Yellowstone and gave them their own show. Rip is a chubby middle-aged guy with the personality of a fence post who occasionally delivers cowboy bromides. He's no Kevin Costner. And then there's Beth, who is supposed to be fierce and smart, but comes across as mean and impulsive. How these two are a loving couple is beyond me. Yet, it's the 6th episode and I'm still watching. Partly, it's because the storytelling is reliably good, with lots of those "cowboy justice" scenes that we came to love in the Yellowstone franchise. But mostly it is because Annette Bening and Ed Harris steal every scene they're in. It is a pleasure to watch these two old pro's. But it also makes you wonder, why the show isn't about these two characters. I suppose, in a way, it is.
