Breaking Pointe

Though the show takes the dancers' work at least as seriously as it takes their relationships, you won't need to know a plié from a pirouette to appreciate the drama, and yes, the touch of class, in Breaking Pointe.

The injuries are extreme, the dancing gorgeous, the dancers young and beautiful, and the slogan the best on TV: "Blood, Sweat and Tutus."

The show's producers don't veer too far from the reality mold in crafting their series. They get a lot of plot and character in the first hour but if they're counting on a revelation every week, they could be forcing the story.

What separates this cast from just about every other real-ity show is that these people are chasing something larger than themselves, more vital to them than fame or money--that brief moment of perfection onstage, achieved after years of study and practice.

The feel is more documentary than "reality" show, which some viewers will appreciate and others won't.

This reality show tries to do the same [tap into the endlessly fascinating world of ballet], following Salt Lake City's Ballet West, but it doesn't bring much new drama to the table.

It shows only scant signs of life while also failing to be all that revealing about the unique profession it depicts.
