The less revealed about the story the better. Let's just say that if you make it to the end of Monday's introductory chapter, you'll very likely feel compelled to see where else this unusual space/soap opera is heading.

Ascension is a handsomely made riff on an irresistibly interesting story pitch.

Through the years my thoughts return to this amazing premise that was sadly cancelled by scifi. A great watch, in its day.

The storytelling of the core characters has a vanilla flavor to it. The overall idea of how space travel works and how Scifi is defined, it is kind of reflected in this show. The sub conflicts within the story are also kind of vanilla. But this is what makes this show so amazing. Because it is integrated into an overall plot that not only keeps you thrilled over the subplots, and engaged with the characters, but you will keep getting surprised by where it all leads. I've watched it multiple times already. Unfortunately, it was canceled after the first season. But the cliffhanger doesn't leave a hole in your stomach like in other shows that get canceled.

The opening installment is sharp over all but has squishy spots; that makes you wonder if the premise and the execution are up to the challenge of a series run.

Everything intriguing is nearly squandered by poor casting and clunky scripting. Still, I suspect the first night's climactic reveal, while clumsily foreshadowed, will make you return for the second.

Ascension has tons of potential and meets a little more than half of it in this early going.

There are several intriguing concepts built into Syfy’s Ascension, but the execution is not quite up to snuff in the first episode and infuriating by the conclusion.

Ascension aspires to be a cautionary tale on a grand scale. But its cardboard characters and a paint-by-the-numbers script just aren’t up to the task.

Awesome, a good case study for why mainstream reviews are such poor guides for hardcore sci-fi fans. One of those rare miniseries that dispense with an over-reliance on "character building" and gives centre stage to the issues that transcend individuals: scientific advancement, the collective struggle for survival, social engineering, evolution. A refreshing change for viewers tired of draggy, chatty series. (-1 point for the annoyingly PC moralising that saturates the dialogue of a primary antagonist.)
