Despite finding it tedious to repeat missions I had already concluded in Champions of the Continent and being disappointed with its lack of true focus on a layered piece of narrative, I did have fun.
Because of the diverse array of playstyles Marvel Cosmic Invasion supports, it's way easier to recommend than Tribute Games' previous beat-'em-up effort.
More than anything, I vibed with Total Chaos' creative dungeon-crawling routine, its secrets and scares, its weird developments and frantic encounters, and I even enjoyed tangling with my overweight inventory. There are settings to untick everything from hunger to weapon durability, but I played through the game on standard and found its systems generous and satisfyingly manageable. In the end, Total Chaos purely nails this sad survival horror sweet spot that I didn’t even realize I was jonesing for.
This feels like a sadly squandered opportunity that was rushed to release. Whether it's the ambiguous map, frustrating stunlock instakills, vague poise system, or the inexplicably awkward jump animation over water, it's outright hard to recommend Possessor(s) over a growing backlog of this year's better metroidvanias.
