Under Paris, then is a cheesy yet canny creature feature romp with gritty Gallic bite, taking itself – enjoyably – rather more seriously than it deserves.

Due to increasing marine pollution, a shark evolved into a new species. This is more dangerous and can reproduce itself. The naive mayor of Paris doesn't care and starts the triatlon. A group of courageous police officers and a shark expert try to avert the worst. Will they succeed? The movie has a few jumpscares and lots of severed legs. It's unbelievable how many people accidentally fall into the water and get eaten. So there is a certain trash factor to it. But otherwise interesting stuff. Translated with **** (free version)

Under Paris has some ecological messaging and commentary on the political games that cost lives, but it’s mostly about sharks and swimmers. And that works in any language.

A solid shark thriller whose admirable but clunky eco-warnings almost get in the way of a good time. Best when it allows itself to really go in-Seine.

Regardless of what mode filmmakers lean into for a shark movie, they need to bring something worthwhile to that mode. Under Paris gets about halfway there on every front — drama, thrills, terror, character conflict, humanity-versus-nature messaging — and not much further than that.

Director and co-writer Xavier Gens’ bleak thriller doesn’t do much with characters and doesn’t traffic much in “hope” and a new day dawning.

Under Paris isn't a bad film. It builds suspense nicely, and I can say I enjoyed the chaos at the end. However, I found the idea of the entire city being devastated over a shark in the river a bit absurd. The film loses all its realism in the closing moments.

This movie isn’t helped by the fact that it is dubbed. The script is poor and it isn’t helped that every film about a shark is compared to Jaws. It has the usual plot points including the sceptical politician. You’ll be frustrated by the ending.

(Mauro Lanari) June 2024: while a report on the risks of athletes at the upcoming Olympics due to the climate crisis is published ("Rings of fire: Heat risks at the 2024 Paris Olympics"), Netflix produces and distributes a film on this topic. I read about the denialist immediate replies against the so-called eco-terrorists and I watch how the French Xavier Gens, specialized in horror films, can only destroy such a juicy premise. Shark B movie, dark comedy, political satire, parody of environmentalists, and the directorial jaws devour the ecological message.

It has a really forgettable title, it should have been called En Seine. Anyway the production quality is high, especially the locations. It has nice cinematography, especially the underwater shots. The special effects are mostly good but towards the end as they get more ambitious it looks worse. The sound design and music is good but forgettable. The characters too are very forgettable. The film is a little pretentious. Generally shark movies are bad by nature but at least they are fun. This film isn't fun at all and that makes this one of the worst shark films I've ever seen as it is not entertaining in the slightest. Even the climax that brings more of the silly feels so out-of-place after all the serious before it. Right, I'll quickfire some other things I didn't like. Annoying jumps cuts for the first death. Unlikeable characters. Mixed messages. Forced romance. Stereotypical and predictable. Plot holes throughout. Incomprehensible character decisions. Overall it's probably my least favourite shark movie.

Just what we needed. Another "predator in unexpected movie". It's a stupid premise that needs to be retired. I love a good shark movie. the problem is that there are lots of shark movies but only a handful of good ones. This is not one of them. This is basically Jaws but in Paris. So ratherjust rewatch Jaws with a French dub if that's what you're looking for.
