What lingers is the affectionate sense of family and place. Modest goals accomplished.

There’s nothing offensive in the relentlessly upbeat Tio Papi. It’s just all so polite and saccharine. Life lessons are learned every few minutes, and the ending is telegraphed from the beginning.

Although its formulaic storyline...holds no surprises, the film nonetheless exerts a certain charm.

Ray Ray's belated journey into manhood never feels sentimental or precious. But it also never strikes an emotional tone that's more than blandly agreeable.

If it weren’t for the well-intentioned moments of pathos — a tear or two, hear and there — Tio Papi would be a complete waste of time.

Doesn't try to be anything more than a soft-serve pull of treacly pandering.
