The Woman King is unafraid to sprawl out and dig in as it explore histories untold, while delicious action sequences of near-exclusively hand-to-hand combat unfurl in front of us. It is a celebration of a filmmaker and a cast at the peak of their powers.

The Woman King overcomes the perils of its overstuffed script with a collection of performances that elevate the whole. As expected, Viola Davis is the emotional center of the piece, masterfully fine-tuning her performance to go from fierce to vulnerable as needed.

Unfortunately the screenplay, by Dana Stevens, relies on crowd-pleasing story beats and injects a groan-worthy romantic subplot; the movie yearns a bit too much to be a hit. At least director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond the Lights, The Old Guard) brings a lively musicality to the sequences depicting Dahomey cultural rituals, as well as a clean ferocity to the many (and gruesome) battle sequences.

Sure, it’s overly simplistic and not altogether historically accurate but if anyone is looking for a well-made, action-fueled popcorn movie, “The Woman King” sure beats a Wikipedia page every day of the week.

The sense of sisterly solidarity that powers The Woman King is the movie’s raison d’être; it’s also part of Prince-Bythewood’s authorial signature.

An action-drama sourced from history (while riffing considerably on that history), The Woman King is a sturdy testament to how renewed a staid form can feel when it’s stretched to include different narratives.

Historically inaccurate. There's no getting around that and they absolutely shouldn't have said it was for the sake of virtue signalling. There are plenty of historian youtubers who debunk the claims the film makes and clearly did more research than the films own historians did. If you ignore this then it's a pretty good action drama film. Viola Davies is a great actress and it's refreshing to see her play a role where she can show more emotion.

Should have called it a fantasy movie with zero ties to history. The tribe where of the most brutal slave trader that would invade, steal and kidnap people to sold in the slave market. Changing them to heros is hard to swallow.

Entertaining enough for modern cinematography. Doesn't really help the case that much, when It's apparent that they're glorifying one of the worst slave traders in all of Africa. And trying to change that fact, and shifting it one to parties, not at fault, is nothing short of vile and disgusting. Is this really a story you guys wanted to portray? Out of all the rich content, Africa could provide?
