It's hard to remember a film that mixes disparate, delicate ingredients with the subtlety and virtuosity of Sofia Coppola's brilliant The Virgin Suicides.

(Coppola) connects with the essential purity of Eugenides' story, stripping it down to its bare essentials and cutting straight to everything that's wonderful about it.

This film stays with me during my toughest times. Touching and thought-provoking story of five teen girls, living in the 1970s in Michigan from the perspective of their neighbours. Colors, acting and soundtrack - for me they are the TOP3 of the movie. They help with creating the worrisome air during the showing. If you like movies about emotions and changes and also you value the esoteric climate - "The Virgin Suicides" should be perfect choice. Sofia Coppola didn't defeat. Big respect towards her for choosing real teenage girls and boys!

Great aesthetics, soundtrack and directing. A great adaptation of the peculiar style of the book

It's quite funny, though not in a predictably irreverent way, and it moves along briskly - a little too briskly toward the end.

In contrast to big-screen bummers we see every week, this movie conveys genuine sorrow.

Variety
Humor prevails throughout, but it doesn't deflate the disturbing elements of the tale, which miraculously manages to stay droll, heartfelt and poignant to the end.

While not exactly a cop-out, Virgin may leave some viewers who crave traditional closure with the same hollow ache described by the narrator as follows: "What lingered after them was not life but the most trivial list of mundane facts."

Sofia Coppola, who's directed the film from her own screenplay, narrowly misses making the story work on the screen.

In Sophia Coppola's directorial debut we are witness to a series of tragic events that take place in a quiet suburban neighborhood in the 1970s. Based on the spectacular book by Jeffrey Eugenides, and featuring the music of Air, this movie is perfection. It is a hauntingly beautiful depiction of young love and the pains of **** expectations.

Textured coming of age morbid teen drama fails to fully make use of the talented cast and great soundtrack beyond anything average. Somehow the short runtime drags it's heels due to the poor pacing and the screenplay never really explores the deeper themes of psychological trauma that drives the characters to the titular suicide pact. Definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of this genre.

"The Virgin Suicides" is a coming of age but grim tale of strict parents dealing with their daughters, and a bunch of boys fall obsessed with them. The movie is twisted, but forgettable.

Distinctly Sofia Coppolian, The Virgin Suicides is bleak and tragic. Occasionally funny--the film is one that will stick with its viewers. You'll understand why.
