The cast is perfect in every way, and each actor brings the right amount of silly and serious to their respective role. This might not be quite as good as Kaufman’s beloved property, nor as brilliant as the stage musical, which remains the definitive distillation of Toxie’s antics. Still, it is a damned fun time at the movies with enough nods and references to please even the most diehard of Troma purists.

This remake had quite a journey! First announced in 2010, the film was initially planned as a PG-13 version (more family-friendly) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Toxie. Then came years of silence until 2016, when Guillermo Del Toro joined as producer and reshaped the project. In 2018, Legendary Pictures acquired the rights and brought back the original 1984 producers, and a year later, director Macon Blair — a longtime Troma fan — took over, determined to honor the studio’s wild and gory spirit. Filmed in 2021 and first shown at Fantastic Fest 2023 to great acclaim but no distributor interest, it finally hit screens in 2025 — fifteen years after its announcement! The final product? Pure Troma madness: absurdly gory for no reason, yet irresistibly entertaining. Not exactly a comedy, but packed with darkly funny moments — like someone getting their arm ripped off and immediately worrying about calling their dad. With a bold cast including Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood, all risking their reputations for the fun of it, The Toxic Avenger stands as a twisted gem. Not the film of the year, perhaps, but one that matured beautifully over time — and absolutely worth the wait.

This was a lot of fun. It retained more of the feel of the original than I expected, while still being a very different movie. It was truly ridiculous. Dinklage was great as Winston and the voice of Toxie, while Lisa Guerreiro carried his awkward, heartfelt portrayal over perfectly while playing Toxie's "bod". Strong performances all around, which really helped to sell the silliness. Taylour Paige brought down the house with her deadass delivery of the word "Zamboni". The house was admittedly only about a dozen people after a few walked out during the first gory scene, but most who stayed seemed to have a good time. It's not for everyone, but that's very much in the spirit of the '84 version. My only gripe is that I was hoping for more practical effects. I didn't actually have a problem with the cheesy CGI. It's silly fun and fits the cartoonish nature of the movie's reality, but more practical effects to balance it out would have helped maintain even more of that old Toxic Avenger feeling. The ones that are there are cool though. If you like horror comedy I'd say this is definitely worth your time. Always great to see something with this much character on the big screen. And stay for the post credits.

The movie’s cast members all seem to understand their assignments, which makes even the sketchiest material seem more robust. There’s also more technical polish, as well as a general knack for comic timing, than you might expect from a remake of “The Toxic Avenger.”

What it lacks in so-bad-it’s-good silliness it makes up for with its heart and mostly practical slaughterfests. Kevin Bacon and Peter Dinklage having an absolute blast in their roles doesn’t hurt, either.

This new The Toxic Avenger is relatively restrained, infuriatingly unfunny, yet entirely on-the-nose for more than just the stench of rot and urban decay that its scenes so frequently evoke. Sometimes the old hits are just better left uncovered.

I did not know what to expect, but this movie is campy as should be expected. The violence is brutal, bloody, and you could make a drinking game from from every time they swear and curse in it and be tanked by the end of the movie from over a bottle required. The 18+ rating is well earned, and makes for a fun movie that is a good popcorn flick. I had heard it was woke, but it also mocks the woke on the same coin. It is a movie that takes itself seriously, but does not take itself seriously. I was pleasantly surprised by how they did it, and got away with the violence and everything that made nods to the original with the tutu and origins. Rated as a comedy but it is more Action Comedy, that works given how much I still love the original.

The film knows exactly what it wants to be: a silly, campy B-movie, and it succeeds at that!The way it’s filmed, the dialogue, and the actors’ exaggerated performances are all a clear love letter to the ’****’s very bloody, gory, and quite funny at times. It’s an entertaining film if you’re into this type of movie.

’The Toxic Avenger’ has had a long and crazy journey, going back to the original's release in 1984. You should now know what to expect when you see Toxie coming. This is the first “Hollywood” adventure for the franchise, and it does a solid job overall of providing you with some dark, gruesome, and out-there entertainment. It’s still a B-level movie like the others, but it does try to elevate the storytelling while keeping the slapstick and gore to the levels you expect, and it’s mostly successful with that. ‘The Toxic Avenger’ is a wild and over-the-top ride that has a few missteps, but if you allow yourself just to let loose and be in the moment, you can have a good time with it (as long as you like the obscene and over-the-top gore and vulgar humor).
