The Salt Path

It’s a film that could do with a little more feeling overall – and more fury, too.

It makes genuinely important points about homelessness, and the middle-class horror of ever crossing that line. But the script, by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida, She Said) is a surprising letdown.

Making her feature-film debut, Elliott handles their story gently, with patience – though it might feel a bit slow for some.

There’s little effort to make us understand the failed systems that led them to this point, or the new normalcy they’re forced to adjust to – indeed, any of the more subtle, complex facets of this story.

Engaging turns from Anderson and Isaacs can’t elevate a narrative that ultimately goes nowhere, although it might make you want to get the tent out of the attic at long last.
