Yen continues charging ahead in “The Prosecutor,” which frequently goes hard enough to fly through its corniest lulls.

The idea is good, but in practice The Prosecutor doesn't fully feel like a legal drama, nor does it feel like a martial arts film. It's a decent film with strong direction, but laden with regrettable missed opportunities.

The prosecutor was a good movie. Amazon prime had the English version but I still read the subtitles because the language translation is always still different. Love the action. I would recommend this for a watch.

The Prosecutor is an interesting film, as it's actually a legal-focused thriller first and foremost, with the martial arts action coming second. I found this blend of genres to work surprisingly well, and I give Donnie props for trying something different. The movie features a phenomenal opening action sequence and an incredible climactic one too. When it comes to the action scenes, you definitely won’t be disappointed. However, the legal aspect—which makes up the majority of the film—is unfortunately a bit lacklustre and predictable. I wish the courtroom scenes had explored more of the complexities of the justice system and delivered more intense drama. It didn’t help that the villain was incredibly one-dimensional. Still, it’s an entertaining action movie overall, and this film does show that Donnie knows how to handle action.

The Prosecutor is often at odds with itself, but is saved by the sheer, bravura intensity of its superior action thriller side.

While Yen makes sure to acknowledge that he isn’t as young as he used to be, such admissions prove needlessly self-effacing.

Developed by China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate and directed by butt-kicking luminary Donnie Yen, The Prosecutor is a bizarre mashup of courtroom procedural and action flick; it is just as keen on lionising due process and the “shining light” of Chinese justice as it is on reducing civic infrastructure to smithereens in several standout bouts.

As a Donnie Yen vehicle that showcases the star’s still-amazing physical skills and moves at a pacy clip for almost two hours, The Prosecutor has the storytelling energy and visual panache to smooth over the rough spots.

With The Prosecutor we come for Donnie Yen and for the fights, and if we’re studying Mandarin, to bone up on Chinese legal arcana. Because God knows there’s a lot of dialogue to this thing. But at some point, all that starts to feel superfluous and in the end, boring.

(Mauro Lanari) Hong Kong isn't Japan, and Donnie Yen is neither Kurosawa nor Ozu. The discomfort of surviving in the city's slums is only hinted at, same for the Shakespearean tragedy and the disillusionment with earthly justice ("Everyone here is staying strong and keeping true! But we can't eliminate crimes! Even we police are helpless sometimes"). Yen doesn't even possess the poetic universe of his compatriots Woo and To, and at sixty, he continues in his only role, from "Ip Man" to the blind antagonist in "Wick 4": many drones, a lot of martial arts action, many fight choreographies shot like an FPS video game, and little courtroom drama. It underpromises, but delivers on what it promises.
