Making your characters relatable, likable, charming and vulnerable might seem to be a fairly obvious assignment, but it conflicts with the comic-book-movie urge to make its characters completely and devastatingly awesome. In getting back to basics, “First Steps” proves to be easily the best superhero movie of the year.

There’s no bold genre reinvention afoot in this reboot, and its thwart-the-baddies plot remains bound to familiar equations, though at least now the equations actually balance.

At a time when everyone is complaining about superhero fatigue, it seems almost perverse to say that maybe the Fantastic Four should have had another film first. Instead, they rush to an ending that bolts them so neatly into the greater continuity.

Fantastic Four: First Steps is undoubtedly the best film made by Marvel in its current phase. Marvel has been going through one of the worst phases of its life, with a wave of bad movies, but Fantastic Four came along and **** all the negative expectations. It is undoubtedly the best Fantastic Four movie. This movie has two great post-credits scenes and one of the best plot twists in Marvel's current phase, great sound effects, great visual effects. This movie is 10/10. I highly recommend it.

The best parts of this film are the retro futuristic setting, and the fact that they succeeded in depicting certain characters in a live action setting. The cast is very capable, however they don't seem to do very much in the two hours they are given. Once again, another Marvel film is held back from greatness by lackluster writing.

It's fine. Not bad. Not great. Just exceptionally mediocre. The characters have no real dynamic with one another. Nor do they have much in the way of needs/wants. The Thing likes a girl. Johnny likes a Silver Surfer. Sue and Reed are having a baby. The aesthetics are the real standout. Cool, inventive retro production design. And while it's commendable that Marvel is willing to take some risks with the look and feel of their extended universe, they totally lack the confidence to follow through. FF devolves into another flashy-flashy-bang-bang big boss battle. Save the world from the existential threat. It's so done and worn out and boring.

Fantastic Four: First Steps is definitely a visual treat. The artistic direction gives it a cool retro 1950s vibe, with slick visuals and stylish effects that make it fun to look at. The set design and color palette are impressive, making it feel like a comic book brought to life in the best aesthetic sense. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The characters are flat and forgettable, the story feels shallow, and the villain is more laughable than threatening since every move of his is predictable. It comes across like a kids’ movie but without the charm or excitement that could make it enjoyable. Nice to watch for the style, but everything else falls apart.

It is truly amazing how unimpressive this movie is. Nothing interesting happens for about the first 30 minutes, and then when it looks like the movie just might do something to rise above mediocrity, it immediately finds a way to undercut it. In addition, the casting and characterizations are just... off. Sue Storm and Mister Fantastic are unlikable for completely opposite reasons, while Ben Grimm and the Human Torch are kinda just there. Even the literal BIG bad seems underwhelming when he finally fully reveals himself. Ultimately I think this movie has finally killed Marvel for me. Thunderbolts and now this seem to want to go in a direction I don't want to follow. The superheros have gotten a lot wimpier and whinier. Nobody wants to see that.
