An enthralling, even visionary drama that regards its subject with empathy and horror, locates him on the actual piece of land he once owned in Montana and portrays him through a stunning performance by Sharlto Copley, who finds emotional mercury in Kaczynski’s boiling cauldron of rage.

It is a riveting, dreamlike evocation of this man’s tortured, unhappy life, whose transient successes bring him no pleasure of any kind.

With all the revolutionary material written by Kaczinski himself, it’s disappointing that the movie focusses on Ted as a lonely broke incel – instead of a harbinger of the planet’s current technological and environmental apocalypse who just chose the wrong delivery method for his message. Copley is committed to the part, but it’s a lot of sweating and grunting for a film that has no perspective to tell this story. The narrative chooses monologues and montages, when there are plenty of scenes from Ted K’s actual life which would make great dialogues full of conflict. Lots of ambient music and spectacular nature photography can’t mask the picture’s hollow core. Ironically, it’s that kind of sonorous movie that makes you want to look at your phone.

The Unabomber story is interesting enough, but it could take a simplistic or throwaway approach if the script and direction were poor. Fortunately that is not the case with Ted K, which may not be anything spectacular, but it is supported by good directorial work and of course the excellent and committed performance of Sharlto Copley, which I believe without hesitation to be the best performance of his entire career.

A risky experiment with a striking payoff, Ted K is an impressionistic attempt to personalize the most unrelatable experience imaginable: life as a killer.

A little of Ted Kaczynski can go a long way — especially at two hours — even as one’s appreciation for Copley’s intensity and cinematographer Nathan Corbin’s artful shotmaking never wanes. But in the well-trod realm of forensic examinations of the notorious, Stone’s considered hike into the life and times of a very American-made extremist does have undeniable power.

The filmmaking is very strong, but it's Copley’s performance that sells it.

Quite what we gain from the experience is uncertain, with most viewers likely to leave the film understanding little more of the Unabomber than they did two hours before. Still, Ted K is impressive and oppressive in equal measure.

Tony Stone’s avoidance of emotional manipulation in dramatizing Ted Kaczynski’s terror campaign is admirable, but only up to a point.
